From: Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows. Route, Personnel and Statistics for the Season of 1943. Sarasota, FL: J. C. Johnson, 1943. Program, staff & performers. This edition did not include the day-by-day details of the route. The route for this year can be found on the Routes page. Not included here are the photographs. Permission to place the information from this route book on the Circus Historical Society website has been provided by Feld Entertainment, Inc., Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. Circus World Museum's Parkinson Library provided the photocopy of this route book. All information should be checked with additional sources. There will be spelling and typographical errors.
Blasting the prophecies of the many who predicted that insurmountable wartime barriers would keep the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus off the road in 1943, the Big Show has rounded out the most successful season in its colorful history — thanks to the courageous spirit and indomitable will of Robert, Aubrey and Mrs. Charles Ringling.
Facing the toughest problems ever confronted by a circus, these gracious big top personages last winter left their officers' chairs, rolled up their sleeves and proceeded to run the great amusement organization themselves.
They not only put the show on the road in all its might and glory, but they adjusted it to wartime exigencies in such masterly manner as to win the approval of the U. S. Government.
Co-operating with the Office of Defense Transportation, they trimmed the circus' traveling mileage to about half of normal and played fewer cities by lengthening engagements in the larger ones, in order to stay off railroads as much as possible.
But, paradoxically enough, the need of the citizenry for a temporary relief from wartime worries, which the Ringlings abundantly provided with a real, "circusy" circus back in the gay, nomadic mood of its origin, rocketed attendance.
Spurred by sharp twitches of desire for such refreshing diversion, well over four million persons hit the Ringling sawdust trail this year and saw a show that made their eyes pop and their hearts flutter.
And, while the circus contributed to the public morale by diverting the minds of its patrons from the tragedy of war, it stimulated war bond sales tremendously. Through tickets donated to the U. S. Treasury Department and distributed by its local War Savings Staffs this season, 194,656 purchasers of extra war bonds saw the circus free and at the same time helped defray the cost of Victory to the extent of one hundred million dollars.
Nearly 37,000 men and women in the U. S. Armed Forces were admitted to the show without charge in 1943. James A. Haley, the Big Show's first vice president, who has never forgotten the time a circus in France extended him similar courtesy during World War I, took a keen interest in their attendance. Jim, in the First Division of the A.E.F., was one of those hard-fighting Americans who came through at Chateau Thierry, St. Mihiel and Argonne Meuse. He later spent seven months in Germany with the Army of Occupation. This year found him on the Ringling lot, early and late, to give that certain lift to a trouper's morale that's in tune with "the show must go on."
For generations Army men have studied the ways of the circus. Last year, when organizing the big U. S. Army War Show for a country wide tour, they drank deep at the wellsprings of Ringling wisdom and walked off with George W. Smith, the circus' general manager, to move the huge project.
George, for years technical master in the movement and operation of the circus, handled the transportation of the Army Show in flawless fashion and won the commendation of every officer connected with it. This year he was back home again with a bigger job on his hands — managing and moving the world s largest traveling amusement institution.
Produced by Robert, Aubrey and Mrs. Charles Ringling, the 1943 performance was designed to enlighten the spirit and lift the heart, which it did in a grand manner. It was a more interesting show and far richer in entertainment than any of its predecessors.
The skillful blending of its old and new features, as well as the smart touches that accented its dazzling impetus can oe traced to Robert Ringling, the circus' president.
Robert who became an expert in staging productions during the years he achieved a distinguished career starring in grand opera, has been a tower of strength to the circus in fields of music, lighting and the shaping of pageants and spectacles.
The Ringlings' mid-season replacement of spec wardrobe this year, after but four months' use, was unprecedented.
By this costly innovation, the magnificence of the performance was maintained throughout the tour and harvest time patrons feasted their eyes on the same untarnished spic and span splendor that dazzled Manhattan's opening nighters last April.
Before Merle Evans' band finished the last strains of Auld Lang Syne at the closing performance of the 1943 season in Tampa, plans for the 1944 tour of the Big Show were under way.
And next Spring, straight out of Wonderland, will come new and still finer circus, created by Ringlings, run by Ringlings and presented by Ringlings, as The Greatest Show on Earth continues its irresistible onward march.
