From: Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows, Route, Personnel and Statistics for the Season of 1950. Sarasota, FL: Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey, 1950. Program, staff & performers, statistics. See Routes for this season's route. Not included here are the photographs. Permission to place the information from this route book on the Circus Historical Society website has been provided by Feld Entertainment, Inc., Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. "Have you written your article, Buddy?"
"Oh, you mean the little story for the Route Book, Roland? Well, not exactly. I've been thinking about it, but I've been away. When do you have to have it?"
"Yesterday," said Roland, dourly.
Roland is my managing editor, you know, and I am the publisher. Our titles are rather magnificent because we don't get paid for our efforts.
"Now, Buddy, all you have to do is knock off a little piece, in your usual style (that could be a compliment?) about 3 1/2 or 4 pages; something with the mid-century angle and maybe mention C. B. DeMille and the picture, and paying off Hartford; the improvement on the big top, the air vent that makes it cooler for the customers and the kinkers; about the record business in the Garden, and then I suppose you'll have to mention that it got kind of spotty for a while after Korea blew up.
"Oh, and don't forget to work in something about the baby gorillas. You know, Buddy, just three or four pages."
"Okay, Rolly, three or four pages."
So, I sat down to write my little story, but I knew right off that it was all pretty silly. Why, you couldn't even just write the names of all the wonderful people who had been a part of our strange world during the last 50 years on three or four of those tiny pages. Or, could you? And, if you could, would that make an interesting little story? Well, it might. It surely would to some, for each of those names must awaken marvelous memories to some who are still "with it," of those who once were. I didn't know all the names, nor did I know all the persons who went with the names, but the old timers of my boyhood told me wondrous tales of the earlier greats that they had known, so here they are:
James A. Bailey, Mr. Hutch, Sam McCracken, the Ringling Bros. — Al, Otto, Alf T., Charles, John, Gus, and Henry; Happy Jack Snellen, Jimmy Whalen (the Whale), Charlie Rooney, Joe Dan Miller, Denny Curtis, Deafy Denman, Mickey Graves, Jules Turnour, Bird Millman, Ella and Fred Bradna, The Clarkonians (Ernie, Charlie and Percy), Charlie Siegrist, Enrico Diaz, Frank Cook, Will Horton, Tom Dailey, George Goodhart, Dan deBaugh, Harry Overton, Fred DeWolfe, Orrin and Lulu Davenport, Cap Carroll, Al White, Johnny Agee, Cy Compton, May Wirth, Claire Bruce, Slats Beeson, Lillian Leitzel, Alfredo and Lalo Cadona, Con Colleano, Desperado, Eddie Cheese, Sun Down Red, Tommy Nichols, Prof. Arthur Wright, Al Sweet, Liberati, Charlie Ryan, Fred Warrell, Charlie Kannally, Bluch, Willie Moser and his mule, Harry Rittley and his cowbell, Herman Joseph and his shotgun, Leo Crook, Sid Rubeen, Tin Horn Haley, the Hannefords, the Zacchinis, Al Powell, the Millets, Maximo, Truzzi, the Cristianis, the Josephsons, Jackson and Mc-Claren, Johnny Tripp, Willie Denaro, the Rubio Sisters, The Great Wallendas, Clyde Ingalls, Cliko, Cuckoo, Zip, Eko and Iko, George Auger, Jack Earle, Lentini, Major Mite, Baron Paucchi, the Big Lips, Pahwah, Goliath, Sammy Johnson, Albert, Mighty, Big John, August, Whitey, Alphonse, Jasper, John Robinson (in his purple silk undershirt), Mable Cline, Eddie Gallagher, Peanut Bill, Joe Pontico, Willie Green, Zeke, Mike Carey, John McLaughlin, Bill Hobson, Walter McClain, Walter Wilcox, George Smith, Carl Hathaway, John M. Kelley, Polidor, the Picchianis, Joe Beef, Al Loyal, Baghongi, John Daniel, Tom Lynch, Jim Doyle, Waxie Panzer, Frenchy Haley, Sis Hopkins, Blackie Diller, Jonesy, Satan, Sunny-brook, Frank Miller, Tex Elmlundt, Santa Klaus, Dorothy Herbert, Al Butler, Leonard Aylesworth, Harry de Marlowe, Cow O'Connel, Bert Weaver, Jim Pepper, Charlie Wilson, George Meighan, Big Blue, Black Blues Tim, Chicken Charley, Mustache Whitey, Little Eva, John Foley, Mullin, Straight-Ahead-Willy Downing, Scranton Harry, Cigarette Bill, Skinny Jones, Sarge, Torchy, Spader Johnson, Fred Stelling, Johnny Brice, Doc Shields, Norman Bel Geddes, Wally Beery, Bobby Clark, Paul McCullough, Lew Graham, Joe Boynton, Willard Coxey, Dexter Fellows, Harry Staton, Ed Norwood, Charlie Hummel, Walter Wappenstein, Rattlesnake Bill, Ollie Webb, Capt. Bill Curtis, Chick Bell, Fred Smythe, Jim Tarver, Jack Slater, Chief Washington, Andy Dumbus, Buck Baker, the Nelsons, Yacopis, Luicita Leers, Sudan, Puqua, Bill and Lill, Gargantua, Ottokar Bartik, the Rieffenachs, Mabel Stark, Olga Celeste, Clyde Beatty, Frank Buck, Tim McCoy, Andrew the Giraffe Man, and — well, that's it.
That's three or four pages and I'm not even well into thirty years of names. Names that made the circus, our circus, their circus. Names in no particular order of work or merit. Just spangled names, scattered through the years like Stardust on the "Field of the Cloth of Gold." That was a name too — the name of the spec in 1909 I think, or was it 1905? Then, there was "Cinderella," by Charles Ringling, that starred Jenny Rooney. And "Alladin" and "The Wizard Prince of Arabia," "Marco Polo," "Nepal" - So many wonderful, memory-jogging names.
On Thursday night, December 8, 1949, the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus exhibited in Cuba for the first time when it opened a 32-day indoor engagement at the government-owned Sports Palace in Havana. Playing through the holidays to capacity crowds and turning thousands away during the final week, the circus closed in a blaze of glory Sunday night, January 8, 1950, and chalked up a smashing success. The Ringling management gave Cuba a show that made its eyes pop. All of the circus' foremost acts and features that could be crammed and jammed into the one-ring arena of the Palace were taken to Havana. The show's personnel was flown to the island, while a train loaded with animals and equipment was transported by boat.
Havana went wild over the performances and gave The Greatest Show on Earth the warmest reception it ever accorded a visiting amusement organization. And, as Havana took to its first major circus, so did the Ringling troupers take to the gay "Paris of the Caribbean." Touring the metropolis between shows, and after, they particularly enjoyed the colorful city's freedom from restraint and its exciting diversions for all types and tastes. Still circus hungry at the close of the run, the Cuban capital's press and public implored the Big Show to hurry back and make the Havana engagement an annual event. This winter the Ringling Circus will again thrill its admirers across the keys. The run at the Sports Palace will begin December 8, the same opening date as in '49.
