The drawing appeared on the cover of the 1896 courier of the W. H. Harris Nickel Plate Shows. Featured by the show that year, and shown inside the courier, were "Gypsy, the largest elephant that walks," along with her baby, "Barney." The original drawing was made by E. (Emil Roettengartner) Roe, an artist working for the Strobridge Litho Co. The original is in the Hertzberg Circus Collection, San Antonio, Texas. Bandwagon, Vol. 10, No. 5 (Sep-Oct), 1966, cover.
This unusual piece of art was used as a calendar in 1921 by the group that later became the American Circus Corporation. It is interesting to note that the Yankee Robinson title is included in the list and it suggests that in the fall of 1920, when the calendar was printed, there was some consideration for using the Yank title. It did not appear until 1922 when it was tacked on to the Gollmar title. Pfening Collection. Bandwagon, Vol. 10, No. 6 (Nov-Dec), 1966, cover.
The lithograph was used by the Tom Mix Circus during its first tour in 1935. The poster was designed and printed by the Donaldson Litho Co. Burt Wilson Collection. Bandwagon, Vol. 11, No. 1 (Jan-Feb), 1967, cover.
The full lot of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show is shown during the final tour of Europe. This photo was taken on April 24, 1905 in Paris, France. Harold Dunn Collection. Bandwagon, Vol. 11, No. 1 (Jan-Feb), 1967, back cover.
The Bob Hunting Circus toured from 1888 to 1898. This artistic letterhead was used for the 1895 season. The Hunting show is known for its route books which seem to be very common. Bandwagon, Vol. 11, No. 2 (Mar-Apr), 1967, p. 27.
Photos of the Cole Younger & Frank James Wild West show have been all but non-existant. This photo shows staff in front of the side show attractions. The Younger & James show toured only in 1903, using equipment from the 1902 Buckskin Bill Wild West show. Pfening Collection. Bandwagon, Vol. 11, No. 4 (Jul-Aug), 1967, back cover.
