150. Walker, May 22, 2004 - We are trying to carry out some research on behalf of an elderly relative (81yrs) who now lives in Australia. The information that she has provided us with is a little sketchy, but having viewed your site, possibly your goodself or one of your subscribers may identify and be able to point us in the right direction? The husband's name was Alma Walker, he was a musician and Bandstand Leader. We thought nowadays he might be referred to as a Conductor. Alma married a young lady whom we only known as Anita. Anita's mother was a tightrope walker with a circus. The tightrope walking troupe, we are told was known as 'The Flying ...........' The unknowns are the last name of the troupe and the name of the circus. Of the circus we believe that it toured England and possibly the UK in the summer months and in the winter the animals were returned to winter quarters. The Walker family returned to their home in Sheffield. That, unfortunately is all the information that we have. Any guidance or assistance would really be appreciated. Many thanks, regards, John & Janet Wimbleton. Johnwimbleton@aol.com. Respond to this message

149. Circus Poster, May 22, 2004 - Recently bought a Ringling Bros/Barnum and Bailey circus poster, but there was no date. With the blank paper border around the outside it measures 54 by 76 inches. The poster says "the mongolians are coming". If anyone has any info on this poster on when it was made please let me know. It is a truly beautiful poster. Thanks Randy, rpeanuts57@aol.com. Respond to this message
Reply: May 24, 2004 - In 1992, Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey's 122nd edition featured the very finest performers from Mongolia. The souvenir program of The Greatest Show on Earth featured a 22 x 34 poster of "The Amazing Mongolians" along with mug shots of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey and Irving and Kenneth Feld. Giovanni Iuliani
Reply: May 28, 2004 - This is a much bigger poster than you mentioned but there are no pictures of anyone but the performers on this poster. Do you have any more info on this particular poster? Thanks, Randy.
Reply: May 28, 2004 - Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey 122nd edition featured an entire Mongolian circus. The catch phrase in the promotion was "The Mongolians are coming". That means that your poster is about 12 years old and was used in advertising the show. RBBB frequently put up posters inside arenas. The 54 x 76 inches size is the size they use for this purpose. However, Feld as a public relation dept. that would give you more ample information. As for the mention of the smaller size poster (included in
the souvenir program) it was simply so that you can establish that the 122nd edition was in 1992. Giovanni Iuliani
Reply: June 24, 2004 - I saw the circus billboard 'The Mongolians are coming' when Ringling Brothers circus came to St. Louis, Missouri. What the circus wanted to say
that Kazhakh horse riders will be performing. I saw the shoe and the Kazhakh bare back horse riders were fantastic. KB, Krish_Bhadra@mastercard.com.

148. John O'Brien's circus, May 22, 2004 - In reading the April 6, 1878 edition of the Newtown [PA] Enterprise I came across a reference to John O'Brien's circus horses passing through the town. They were on the way from O'Brien's farm in Brownsburg [a small hamlet along the Delaware River - south of New Hope] to Frankford. The notice indicated that his show will start on the 13th. I am looking for additional information about the circus. Jeff Marshall, jlmarshall1@comcast.net. Respond to this message
Reply: May 22, 2004 - John V. "Pogey" O'Brien was born in Frankford. His circus career started in 1861. By 1874 he was associated with P. T. Barnum, an association that ended after the 1875 season. In 1878 he had Campbell's Great 25 cent Circus and was almost bankrupt at the end of the season. He lost this show at the end of the 1879 season. He went on to put out small shows with low admission and fancy titles. On July 22, 1884 process servers were on the lot and the "parade that went out never came back," ending up at the Frankford, PA quarters. When he died on September 7, 1889 he had an interest in Lowande's Brazilian Circus. His career was tarnished by a reputation as a dishonest manager. He died of asthma, in poverty, at his residence in Philadelphia. Just some of the information in Slout's Olympians, pp. 225-226. Thayer and Slout have information on him in Grand Entree, pp. 162-163. Slout's Royal Coupling has information on O'Brien and Barnum 1874-75, pp. 113-131. You might find information on O'Brien in circus history books that deal with Barnum 1874-75. The books mentioned here are listed on the CHS publications page.

147. Benjamin Franklin Williams, May 12, 2004 - I am researching Benjamin Franklin Williams who died 29 October 1905 in Birmingham, AL in a train accident while traveling with a circus. Do you have any record of a train accident in Birmingham, AL in 1905. If so, do you know what the name of the circus was and can you tell what Benjamin was doing in the circus. 146. Finney's Trapeze act, May 12, 2004 - My name is Suzanne Bullett and I'm trying to find out some information about Robert Eugene Finney. He and his brother had a trapeze act with the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey circus in the 1900s. I'm not sure what his brother's name was or what their act was called. If you could send me any information about them I would greatly appreciate it. sbullett@developerfinance.net. Respond to this message
Reply: 19-Jan-05 - The trio was called the Eugene Trio. We (descendants of the Finney family) are looking for information on the trio. Have you found any more information? We would be quite appreciative to know! Thank you, April, fly_girl@mindspring.com
Reply: 29 May, 2005 - I have found a couple of pictures in an old photo album of the Sell Floto Circus from the early 20's that identifies the "Eugene Boys". The photo was taken at Orchard Beach in Boston Mass. The pictures show several people building a "pyramid" but they are not all men. It may be the Eugene trio playing around on the beach with the Sell Floto gang? If you could email me pictures I could try to compare to see if they are the same individuals. Thanks, Libby
Reply: 10 Apr 2008 - Hello Suzanne, I was googling information on the Eugene Troup for the fun of it. Robert Finney was my Grandfather. He had two brothers and I have hundreds of original photos of his trapeze act, and others.

Reply: December 01, 2004 - I am writing from Australia where back in the mid 50s I worked at Wirth's Circus for a period of 3 years. I was employed as an
assistant to Pallenberg's Bears a bear act from San Antonio,Texas. The Pallenbergs (Emil,Hannah,Billy and Kathy and I toured by train around Australia with Wirth's for the entire period of their 2 year contract. I did not know May Wirth but knew Doris Wirth who was in charge of the circus and also Phillip Wirth who started a zoo at Townsville in Queensland. Also travelling with the circus was Madeline Wirth a sister of Doris. If I can help you with any further information regarding circuses in Australia please contact me and I will be pleased to assist. 144. Spain or Latin America, May 11, 2004 - Query: Gran Circo Keller I sent a question earlier about El Gran Circo Keller which got no reply so I am wondering if anyone can direct me to an organization of circus history in Spain or Latin America. Jennifer Wolcott, lqnatz@rconnect.com. Respond to this message
Reply: 29-Dec-04 - I am also looking for any information re: Circuses from Spain. I just found out that my great-grandmother Carmen Galan (who I was named
after) was a gypsy in a traveling circus. And while the circus was visiting Cuba she met and married my great-grandfather. No one can remember the name of the circus. So I am looking for any info on this that I can. Thank you. Carmen T., Miami, Florida, ctauler@FOWLER-WHITE.COM.

141. Charles Gay, lion tamer, May 09, 2004 - Am looking for information on Charles Gay, lion tamer, who founded Gay's Lion Farm in El Monte, California in the 1920s. I am particularly interested in birth place and marriage. Regards, John Emmerson, Camberley, Surrey, emmer@emmer.karoo.co.uk. Respond to this message
Reply: 12 March, 2005 - What do you want to know? We lived next door to it for a couple years and were there when it folded. Actually, it was the old Gay's Lion Farm and after Mr Gay closed it, Clyde came in and used it as winter quarters a couple years. I was overseas for part of it, but my wife was there and is in the process of putting together a program about this and the things she observed through the fence, and the people that lived in the trailer park and all the work that they did for the circus people. Most interesting. We now live in Glendora, CA, but grew up in El Monte. Keith Liddle, loprofiltrvlr@earthlink.net

140. Korean Twins, May 09, 2004 - I'm looking for information on the "conjoined" Asian boys who traveled with the Barnum and Bailey Circus after 1900 under the name the "Korean Twins." I have a cabinet photograph of the twins taken by Ridenour in Philadelphia in 1903. I also have a larger photograph, by Glasier and also dated 1903, showing the entrance to the Barnum and Bailey "Double Supplemental Exhibition." A large banner in the background reads "The Korean Twins, Greatest Living Curiosity on Earth" and includes vignettes of their "abduction," "at play," sitting behind a table, and riding in an automobile. Does anyone know if the "Korean Twins" were really conjoined, or just emulating the famous Chang and Eng? Also if they were really Korean, as their clothing suggests a Chinese, rather than Korean, origin? I'm also interested in any facts of their lives that might be known. Many thanks. Robert H. 139. Clown Car Act, May 07, 2004 - As a child in South Texas in the early 1950's, I witnessed a clown car act in which lots of clowns piled out of a tiny car (early Austin, I think). I do not remember the name of the circus. I now have a tiny (1931) Austin coupe and would like to buy a copy of footage of such an act, if any can be located. 138. Sells Floto 1916-1924, May 05, 2004 - Do you, or possibly someone else have list of names of performers with the Sells Floto Circus from 1916 through 1924? Frank McCartney and his partner were acrobats with the circus. They did hand stands and balanced on chairs etc. My grandfather's name was Frank McCartney. Everyone called him "Kelly". 136. Morgan Berry, May 04, 2004 - I am interested in any information on Morgan Berry, former elephant keeper at the Wooland Park Zoo in Seattle. Rip Weinseimer, Seattle, WA, Rip.Weinseimer@corixa.com. Respond to this message
Reply: May 07, 2004 - I remember Morgan Berry when, under tragic circumstances, we meet at Rock Forest, Quebec on Saturday, May 6, 1978. He arrived in a Police helicopter and landed in the shopping center's parking lot. Eloise Berchtold, his partner, had been killed by Teak, a male elephant, during a performance on Gatini Circus, on the previous night. While the killer elephant was destroyed there remained another elephant, Thai, who escaped. We shared a ride in a patrol car which drove us to a secluded road where the frightened elephant was found hiding in a bush. Morgan Berry just went after him and within minutes returned with Thai. Mr. Berry was a animal importer who specialized in elephants and was known as an expert in his field. The system seen in the movie "Jurassic Park" was inspired by Morgan Berry and put in use at the Portland Zoo. I have heard that he was also a musician and would hold musical sessions in the barn where he kept the elephants. Giovanni Iuliani.
Reply: May 11, 2004 - Mr. Iuliani: I just purchased Berry's old house in Seattle. It's one block north of the old Seattle line, which allowed him to keep exotic animals without interference from the city. Elephant chains are still on the front lawn, bolted to concrete. I have a lot of stories from neighbors about the elephants and other animals that he would bring back from trips to Africa and Asia. But I'm short on actual documentation or even better, photographs. I'm considering dedicating an area of the house to a circus (especially elephant) theme, a picture of Berry would be great! Could you suggest a source or reference for my research? Rip.Weinseimer@corixa.com.
Reply: May 28, 2004 - En blanco. Maybe I can help you, if you are still interested. I know Mr Berry´s son, he lives in Florida. I will try to find his address. Regards Diego Sandoval, diegosandoval@Supercabletv.net.co.
Reply: 04 June, 2005 - I am one of Morgan's granddaughters. I live in Florida. I would like to share a great photograph with you if you are still interested. Reply: 07 June, 2006 - Hi, I am another one of Morgan's grandchildren actually I believe I am the one with the most information and documentation about him. 135. Gran Circo Keller - Isidoro Ortega, May 03, 2004 - I am looking for information about the Gran Circo Keller. The only things I know about this circus is that it appeared in Concepcion Chile in the early 1900s and it includee a celebrated Cuban lion tamer named Isidoro Ortega. There is a very large poster of this Circus in Red Wing MN which piqued my curiosity and I found a small picture card featuring Isodoro on a collecting site from Spain. The appearance in Concepcion Chile is from a web site of remeniscences about Concepcion. The poster was printed in France and the style is quite satyrical. For instance the elephant appears to be standing on it's trunk and other acts are racing around chaotically behind the imposing figure of Captain Keller. Keller looks a lot like Wild Bill Hickok. Would I be likely to find information if I searched through the venue of the poster printer? It is a French company. Any information or pointers would be appreciated. 131. Milton O. Williams - "Dutch", April 18, 2004 - I am searching for information on a Milton O. Williams who went by the names "Sheboygan Dutch" or just plain "Dutch" and worked with the Ringling Circus in the early part of the 20th Century. He may have been connected to the wagon trains and also worked closely with the Flying Dutchman. 130. 1934 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, April 18, 2004 - Seeking information concerning the 1934 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus typhoid epidemic. Especially need copies of The White Tops Joseph T. Bradbury articles of "The Gumpertz Era" (Pt.3) (1935-36) and (Pt.4) (1937). Also articles published in the Sarasota newspaper(s) during the summer and fall of 1934 mentioning the names of local victims and including final death notice. Myself and Claude Bordez have been working on the circus typhoid incident for a decade and have already written a french language book on the tragic loss of Eloise Berchtold. Giovanni Iuliani, circusarchives@videotron.ca. Respond to this message
Reply: April 20, 2004 - Ironwood Daily Globe (Ironwood, Michigan), August 17, 1934, p. 11. "Detroit -- Stanley Meeker, of Detroit, who was employed in the menagerie department of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus, died as the fifth fatality among 77 employes [sic] taken to a hospital here with typhoid fever nearly a month ago. One other man died in Dayton, O. [Ohio] Forty-seven employes still are in the hospital, nine in serious condition." You may already have this, but just in case, J. Griffin.
Reply: April 23, 2004 - 1934 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Typhoid epidemic is somewhat confusing. While it mentions that the 5th typhoid victim was Stanley Meeker I have him listed under the name of
Frank Meeker. I also have Mr. Meeker listed as having died on August 15
but we can assume that the Ironwood Daily Globe published the news on
August 17,1934. In reason to determine the exact surname of Mr. Meeker one would have to obtain a dead certificate from the Detroit Health Bureau. Giovanni Iuliani.

129. Circus Posters - Hobart's, April 15, 2004 - Circus Posters. I have two big circus posters that each say "Hobart's Big United Circus Acts. Price Valley County Fair, Ord, NE. Sept 16-17-18." At the bottom they say "Copyright 1906. American Show Print, Milwaukee." One shows acrobats and one shows all kinds of performing animals. I'm trying to find out if these are reproduction or original posters, and if there was even a circus by this name. There is an Ord, Nebraska, but it's in Valley County (there is no Price Valley County). Does anyone have any information on these posters? Let me know if you need more information. Thanks. Renee Crosby, rcrosby@unmc.edu. Respond to this message
Reply: April 18, 2004 - So what size is your poster? My 1/2 sheet by the American Show Print is copyright 1907, Milwaukee, and is 21 x 28, and I am aware that the company produced other sizes. The second question I have - was the show title and date printed on the poster or was it attached on a separate piece of paper? Usually a date tail was 9 by 21 inches for a 1/2 sheet, or corresponding to the size of the poster. The date tail was pasted and added to the bottom of the poster. If the date and place was printed on the poster these are normally samples that were sent out to prospective customers. lf the date tail is added to the poster it is most likely a date for a show, as the circus would purchase stock posters and add the date of the performance. However I cannot verify the Hobart Big United Circus Acts as a circus, it may be a group of acts that did a fair date. As I find no route for a circus with this title, it could have been a group of acts that played a fair circuit and not a regular travelling show. Also just because the poster was copyrighted in 1906 the artwork was used for a number of years and you may be looking at a ten year span of time. John Polacsek Detroit, Michigan
Reply: April 19, 2004 - This is a response to John Polacsek. Thanks for your reply. I have two posters and both are approx. 41.5 inches wide x 27 inches tall. To see what one looks like, you can look on Ebay (there is a poster like one of mine listed, but the auction ends early this evening - Ebay item #3717769132 or you can find it by searching "Hobart's" on Ebay). The show title and dates are printed across the tops of the posters and are not attached by a date tail. Thanks for all your information. I wonder if what I have are, in fact, print samples? I wasn't sure if these were original lithographs or reproductions that were done in the 1970's or so. I bought the posters at an estate sale in approximately 1981 and have only seen 2 like them since - the one on Ebay and one hanging in a restaurant in Omaha, Nebraska that has long since gone out of business. Any further insights you might have would be appreciated. Renee Crosby.
Reply: April 19, 2004 - This poster (on eBay) looks to be a one sheet printed sample from the show print house, but that is not a real circus title. Most shows would not order a piece with their name and the date on the same line, even though this is stock artwork, a show would not waste the space for a date, they would put it on a date tail. The artwork looks original, but I cannot tell from the ebay picture. John.
Reply: April 24, 2004 - This is another response to John Polacsek. Thanks for the additional information. I have two more questions though. You mentioned that this is "stock artwork." I'm curious about how you know it's stock artwork? Have you seen it on on other posters bearing different circus names? Also, do you have any idea of the value of such posters, if in fact they are original lithographs? Thanks again for your enlightening information. Renee Crosby.
Reply: April 25, 2004 - I have not seen this particular artwork with other show titles on it, but the Riverside Litho Company in Milwaukee did a number of posters, all the same artwork for a number of circuse titles in the 1920s and 1930s on 1890 lithographs. These stock posters were around for a long time and were finally used up.The same is true of Donaldson, the Enquirer, and Erie, they did special request posters, but many times you ordered a stock number, and the same artwork has five different show titles on it. Many times they sent out samples with ficticious names on the posters just to show you what they could do. The same was true for printed forms, etc. The B.F. Harrison Printing Company of Elyria, Ohio in 1900 sent out a envelope containing a "great number of samples of contracts for the use of theatrical managers" They printed on the back of the form Sample of Call Form No. 10 to be put in pads, with changes desired in name of company and manager, 200 cost $1.50. They were priced accordingly and they also had the same form stock form with name of company and manager omitted, 200 for $1.00. Ted Bowman told me when he was ordering posters for the Carson & Barnes Circus from Enquirer that they would order some to test what could be seen to the best advantage. The poster company had the stock on hand and they simply overprinted the title of the show, but for some it was in red, yellow, green, black, etc. This way they could judge what looked best at a distance. In some cases I have six or seven different circus titles, in
different colors of the same stock Enquirer artwork. The items are called stock because when you lithograph or print a four color item you print as much as you think you can safely store. Then when an order comes in you pull the stock paper from the shelf and simply overprint in one of two colors on the open space the title of the show. In this way you can add the show title in the white space, or in the case of the poster you have, along the top and fill it in with the show title. Many of the catalogues of the period show the stock artwork available and you ordered what you needed based on the reference number that was given. There may be five clown posters available but to be sure that you will get the one you want - you need to order by the stock number. The same is true today, at the Graphic 2000 printing office in Las Vegas they print up a number of posters as a stock design with room for a show title somewhere. They also print up posters that can be run through a press and all they need to add it the name of the show, it is the best way to handle a request. The problem is that a circus will call a week before a date and say we need this poster with a clown, an elephant, etc., and what the printing office does is add the show title and ship it out. Most shows cannot wait weeks until a particular piece of artwork goes back on a press, the same is true today as it was 100 years ago. John Polacsek Detroit, Michigan

127. Circus Folks in Sarasota & Venice, April 15, 2004 - I am researching for a book entitled Circus Folks in Sarasota & Venice: Where are they now? It is a sequel to my just-published Circus Days in Sarasota & Venice, which is specifically about the years 1927-1992 when the Ringling show wintered in those two cities. I am looking for all sorts of people who were associated with the Ringling show during those years or their heirs who might be able to share a family anecdote and photo or two. I want to hear from people behind the scenes as well as performers but they must have lived in Sarasota or Venice for at least one year and must have been associated with the Ringling show in some capacity. If you can share a story or know someone who can, please contact me at kcoolone@aol.com or at kimcool@historicvenicepress.com. Thanks for helping me to preserve this important history for these two circus cities. Kim Cool. Respond to this message
Reply: April 18, 2004 - I am very curious about the book you have published. My understanding is that my aunt and uncle were with the Ringling Circus around the 1920's and early 30's. I would love to know if they are in the book and if so, how can I get a copy of the book. Their names: Milton O. Williams - AKA - Sheboygan Dutch -AKA - Dutch. Ida Williams - no known AKA. Uncle Dutch told stories of working with the wagon trains, taking the trains over the ocean and his work as an understudy with the Flying Dutchman. Ida was an areal butterfly who hung by her teeth from a cord and did stunts in the top of the tents. I would not want to relate any of his stories until I can verify somehow that he was with the Ringling Circus. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. 126. Missouri circus circa 1900, April 15, 2004 - I'm looking specifically for the name of a circus that would have traveled through a small town in Missouri around 1900 and would have returned to the same town on multiple occations (annually, biannually, etc.). I'm doing research for a fiction book I'm writing, and these are the only qualifications that I'm looking for. I currently know nothing about traveling circuses at this time. Do you know of any good resources or books that I can consult to find out more of this type of information. 123. Circus Accident 1940s, April 07, 2004 - I am glad I found this website. I am trying to get some information about an incident that my father saw - I believe in the 1940's in New York City. While I was growing up, my mom took us to the circus to Ringling Bros at Madison Square Garden. My father would never attend, when asked, he would take out this yellowing, old newspaper article showing what happened when he was a kid (from what I can remember him telling me). He was in one of the first few rows, before netting was mandatory and either a highwire walker or acrobat fell right in front of him and smashed his head open - I believe he passed away. It was explained to me that from this incident, the protective netting laws changed (don't know if this is actually true or not). He never went to the circus again and he would occasionally whip out this article from his prized possessions to show anyone interested. Unfortunately, my father passed away in 1991 and my mother threw away this article not realizing that I wanted to keep it. Now I attended the Ringling Bros show with my children in Madison Square on Tuesday, April 6 when I saw the tightrope walker fall on his head. He landed between the mats and immediately prior to his falling, I wondered why the mats were so far away from each other and and if someone fell, the mats might not protect them. Thank goodness he was not seriously hurt. I would like to take the newspaper article from the current circus mishap and scrapbook it next to the article or any archived article I can find relating to my father's experience. Believe it was in the 1940's (1946??) or maybe earlier. Do you know of the incident that I am speaking about and where I can get info on it? Thank you for reading this and thank you in advance for your response. Sincerely, Randi Seeley, Brooklyn, New York Satinrockr@aol.com. Respond to this message

122. Jacob G. Smith - Kelly Bros., April 06, 2004 - I am looking for information about a circus called Kelly Bros. that was around about 100 years ago. They wintered in Petersburg Illinois. Jacob G. Smith was a trapeze artist with them and I think when he met his future wife in Petersburg he then gave up the circus life and became a local businessman. He also had two sons in the circus life. John Smith (known as Cap' Smith) was a horsetrainer with Cole Bros circus and his other son Harry was in a circus but I don't know which one or what he did. Hope you can help me. DeAnne, MissDee53@aol.com. Respond to this message
Reply: April 10, 2004 - See answer Number 92. [Messages 51-100] The Illinois State Journal Register on November 9, 1984 carried an article about the Circus Ring Barn in Petersburg, which was originally operated by as Shipp's Indoor Circus from 1890 to 19l0. Then it was taken over by Patrick and Daniel Kelly as Kelly Brothers Winter Circus, and the ring barn was taken down in 1937. It noted that by "using kindness and repetition, John Smith trained 3 to 6 year old horses to box, The horses stood up on their hind legs and boxed." Another story about the circus in Petersburg noted that John Smith was a horse trainer and the son of Jake Smith. Died June 20, 1969 at Peru, Indiana, buried at "Showman's Rest." The article also had a note that Jake Smith was a tightrope walker with the Miles Orton Circus, who would have been active from 1885 to 1906. John Polacsek Detroit, Michigan

121. Goldkette family, March 30, 2004 - I'm a Paris-based historian researching the American career of the Goldkette family of acrobats, horsemen, mimes and singers who came to the U.S. from Europe in the early 1900s. Baptiste (b.1879) and Franconi (b.1878) Goldkette were acrobats who arrived in 1907 and were based in Lapaz, Ind. and later Plymouth, Indiana. They also performed in Cuba in 1908. Mine, Eline, Clara and Anglelina Goldkette had a vaudeville sister act. Mine was also active in the founding of the 'White Rats' movement to unionize vaudeville performers, around 1910. Any information about the above gratefully received. Tony Baldwin, jazztrash@wanadoo.fr. Respond to this message
Reply: April 06, 2004 - On the US side I don´t know so much about these Goldkette´s, but on the European side, grandpa Goldkette, originally from Sweden worked under the name Bruno Bronett and this is the name his children and grandchildren kept. Now still working in circus is his great-greatgrandson Robert director of Cirkus Scott. Apart from the Goldkette´s you mentioned in the US, the last one I know of alive was Alice Goldkette (1917) later married Mathiasko. She died in 1995 in San Diego. Natasha Gerson, nani@xs4all.nl.

120. Donald Wright - Tom Mix Circus, March 29, 2004 - I am loloking for information about a specific character in a Tom Mix Circus. Donald Wright, was a professional clown out of Elkhart Indiana. I have a Tom Mix circus poster that has an image of several clowns, one of which bears a stiking resembelance to Donald Wright and the clown character he potrayed. 118. Circuses 1932 Michigan, March 28, 2004 - I am looking for information on what circuses were performing around 1932 in Flint or Detroit Michigan. I was also wondering if there is a database available on these circuses that has a listing of accidents around that time. I am looking for a circus motorcycle accident that happened around that time period. Thanks, Kristie Pallas, cruella76@hotmail.com. Respond to this message
Reply: April 06, 2004 - To my knowledge at that time there were few traveling circuses with motorcycle acts as the equipment was too difficult to move in and out of the ring. The only shows that carried acts of this type were a circus with a multiple date stand and carnivals which were set up for a week or more. There are no motorcycle accidents on circuses in 1932 noted in the Detroit Free Press that year, or the years before or after, in Michigan. The only motor cycle rider on a circus for the years around 1932 was Mrs. Carrie Davis who was performing with the Morris & Castle Circus which was playing an extended date at the Michigan State Fair in September 1931. She rode a motorcycle around a bowl shaped den while a lion was trying to catch her. She was noted in the newspaper because she was asking for a divorce from her husband, who was apparently worse than the lion chasing her, since her divorce was granted Sept. 12, 1931 at Detroit. John Polacsek, Detroit, Michigan.
Reply: April 23, 2004 - This is to Mr. Polacsek who replied to my message, I was wondering, if maybe the family stories were wrong and the accident that occured was not of a motorcycle. Any info on any circus accidents around that time would be great, she is listed as an "unidentified girl" and was temporarily blinded due to the accident. Her real name was Beulah Goheen. Thanks so much for your help and also big thanks for the info.
Reply: April 25, 2004 - I have nothing further to add. If you want to continue the quest find a library that has or can inter library loan the Billboard for those particular years and become friendly with a microfilm machine. The magazine was 100 pages normally and you are looking for the circus reviews and news pages which normally run only four pages out of every weekly issue. John Polacsek.

117. Frank Cunliffe - Billy Bouncer, March 22, 2004 - I am looking for information on Frank and Anna Cunliffe from Chicago, Illinois. Reply: March 23, 2004 - Would this be Billy Bouncer the India Rubber Clown/Billy Bouncer the Trampoline King Clown we are talking about? He might have travelled with Ringlings at some point, this would then have to be before he went solo (to coincide with the Fishers) but from the 1910´s until approx 1924 there was 'The Billy Bouncer Circus' which was a vaudeville show in a circus tent stageset, starring 'Billy Bouncer, famous Circus Clown.' The act was that a speaker invited audience members to the stage in a jumping competition on a big trampoline and to show their best at leaps and bounds. Then Billy would bound into the middle of them, soon sending them back to their seats, bouncing off the trampoline, walls, ceiling, etc. This Billy Bouncer indeed wore a white costume, with sort of blooming frilly shorts over a body suit kind of thing, probably with hidden padding! If this is the same clown you mean I can send you some newspaper announcements and things in pdf. nani@xs4all.nl

Reply: March 25, 2004 - The Silvan Drew Motorized Circus was on the road from 1927 to 1929. For the 1929 season it opened April 20 at Asheboro, North Carolina, then went north through Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, as far north as Connecticut, then south through New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. The season ended October 26 at Hertford, North Carolina The show went into winterquarters at Greensboro, North Carolina until it was sold at auction December 14, 1929. The 1931 National Geographic famous circus article by Bev Kelley is reportedly illustrated with a large outdoor billing stand of the Silvan Drew Circus that was taken in the Washington D.C. area probably in 1929. The Bandwagon November-December 1986 issue carried Part 1 of an article on the history of the 1927 and 1928 show by Joe Bradbury. It is 10 pages of great information and photos. The January February 1987 issue finishes the 1929 season on the Silvan Drew Motorized Circus as Part 2 adds another 7 pages of information. John Polacsek, Detroit, Michigan

Reply: 15 August, 2005 - Hello, I too am looking for more information on the LaMont Bros. Circus. My Great aunt was married to one of the Brothers. I have a very large picture of all the tents set up (the big top has 9 center poles) this was taken in Cleveland, Ohio in 1919. I had the owner of a circus that came to our town, look at this photo and he explained what some of the tents were. There are animals tents, wardrobe, and as far as I can tell there were about 8 poles for the side show tents which are right in front of the big top. I have Letter head from the circus and numerous small photos of everyday circus life. The family story that has been handed down is that the circus traveled to Europe and the states, when it was dissolved it was bought by Ringling Brothers. Now that is family stories so how true it is I am not sure. Lila Swan, swan@sdwinc.com, Glenrock, WY

113. Gregory - Chester & Sylvia, March 19, 2004 - Chester C. Gregory was born in 1907 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada. He spent many years in the circus industry and, at the time of his death in 1952 in Nebraska, was thought to have operated the Biller Brothers Circus. Chester and his wife were here on Prince Edward Island with the circus around 1950. It was the only time that he and I met face-to-face. His wife, the former Sylvia Morris, was thought to have been born in Missouri. She performed the "iron jaw" act at the circus performances. After Chester's death, Sylvia is reported to have remarried to a Hirschberger. She died in Santa Rosa, California around 1970. Chester and Sylvia are both buried in York, South Carolina. If anyone has information about Chester and Sylvia Gregory, I would most certainly appreciate receiving the same. I have pictures of both Chester and Sylvia that I would be willing to e-mail to anyone with a deep interest in the circus industry. Vimy William Gregory, vimygregory54@hotmail.com. It portrayed a young woman who became blind while mounting a horse and riding it in air into a pool of water below. It was referred to as a flying horse act. Supposedly she rode blind for 11 years. Is there any historical data on this? The movie stated it was a true story. lisa@Madonnaconstruction.com. Respond to this message
Reply: July 10, 2004 - Sonora Webster Carver joined The Great Carver Show in 1924 as a horse diver. After the show settled permanently in Atlantic City in 1929, the horse diving attraction starred Sonora and her horse Red Lips. In August 1931, Red Lips lost its balance during a dive, causing her to hit the water face-first and detaching her retinas. She continued horse diving until 1942, when she moved to New Orleans with her husband. Her autobiography, A Girl and Five Brave Horses, was published in 1961; the Disney movie based on her life, Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, opened in theaters in 1991. On 21 September 2003, Sonora passed away at age 99. 109. Mars, March 17, 2004 - I have an old trunk from around 1900. Across the top is written "The Dancing Mars Theatre". I've been told that they were a circus before
Barnum & Bailey but I haven't been able to find any information on them. They may have just been an act for a circus by another name. If you have any information on them please let me know. Thanks. Karla Preston, ozarkmtnantiques@yahoo.com. Respond to this message
Reply: March 19, 2004 - The Dancing Mars were not a circus but a vaudeville trio that specialised in acrobatic/pantomime dance shows with scenic effects, telling quaint little stories, such as their most succesfull 'All for a kiss' (1911 to 1915 approx) described as 'an elaborate terpsichordean diversion,' the trio consisted of Bobby, Gertrude and Carletta, not sure what their last name was. 108. Car - Psycho Circus, March 16, 2004 - I have a 1972 Opel Manta that has been greatly modified. At one time it had circus scenes around the sides of the car and underneath. All I have been able to find out is that it was part of Psycho Circus in Ohio in the 70's. I am trying to find a picture of what the car looked like while the circus still had it. Where could I find something like that? Any help would be very appreciated. Please reply, klkrent@aol.com. Respond to this message

107. King Bros. circus, March 16, 2004 - I am looking for info on King Brothers circus of the 1950's and of Floyd King. Also need pictures of their trucks. Thanks, Tom Mayfield, North Carolina, Janiecmayfield@aol.com. Respond to this message
Reply: September 04, 2004 - I saw your inquiry about the King Bros. Circus on the Circus Historical Society website. First off, I have 19 photo reprints from 1948 and 1950 from the original negatives I have been offering occassionally on ebay for $ 12.99. Alot of animal shots and some equipment and people. I am not sure how much information you are looking for and if there are specific pieces of information. The basic start to the story is two brothers, Howard and Floyd King. They operated numerous shows over a period of 40 years such as Gentry Bros. Circus in 1927 or Walter L. Main in 1928, to the leased Cole Bros. Circus equipment in 1955 they took out as King Bros. Circus. It lasted one season and the equipment was returned and sold to Paul Kelly in Peru, Indiana. I'll be glad to try to help some more if I can. Best to you. 105. McKinney - Daredevil act, March 15, 2004 - I'm looking for information about William McKinney, who had a Daredevil act. The only remaining photo shows him on a sled-like contraption, riding a roller coaster type track (complete with tunnels). He performed in the late 1800's-early 1900's throughout the country; his wife Elzora was a singer and perhaps also a performer. The only other info we have is that they married in Chicago, lived in Atwood, IL a while, and that eventually he went to California and was never heard
from again. If anyone has any clues, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Robin Robbel, robin29@triad.rr.com. Respond to this message

104. RBB&B and the Kaiser, March 14, 2004 - Hello, I'd like to find some documentary evidence that the Kaiser sent generals to watch RBB&B Circus before the Great War, to find out how to move large numbers of men and horses efficiently. I gather, Civil War generals did the same. I hope someone can help out an Australain scholar, here. 103. Circus in Puerto Rico, March 13, 2004 - History of Circus in Puerto Rico: Reseaching a circus performer in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. I have had no luck finding information on circuses during the early to mid 1900s in Puerto Rico. Would anyone have information or know where I could find information on circuses in Puerto Rico during this time period. Did any of the "bigger" circuses travel to Puerto Rico and recruit? I can be reached at cramirez@pbwt.com. My name is Carol. I welcome any suggestions. Thank you for your time. Respond to this message
Reply: May 27, 2004 - I was looking for information on my great grandfather's circus and I bumped into your email. My greatgrandfather was in the "Lowandes circus" in the early 1900's. I have his diaries and just started to look more into this, he has a small map were he marked all the visit to Puerto Rico and other islands. This is were he meet my greatgrandmother. His names
was Eduardo Dilme and he was a contortionist, he would wear a frog head. I also have some pictures of him and the circus. Let me know if you need anything else or now more. I am reading his diaries and also talking to my grandmother, his daughter. Let me know if you are still interested in more info. Gilda Dare, omtny@optonline.net.
Reply: 15 January, 2006 - My dear friend, For a brief period during this time, I had the one and only circus in Puerto Rico. I am very bad at dates, but maybe this will help. There were about 3 small circuses in Puerto Rico. The largest and most famous, Hermanos Marcos, they lived in Mayaguez and toured the island for many years with a white horse named Palomo. They were brothers, Hiram was the guiding force. One brother was Cesar and I can't remember the others. Hiram was a wonderful comedian and trumpet player. The other two circuses were tiny and I can't give you anymore info on them. I came to Puerto Rico with my small circus and spent 3 years there, this was about 1972? Before I arrived there was a large circus named Circo Romano, I believe from Brazil that suddenly left the entire troupe abandoned including the animals, for a long time an Animal Park called Safari Park had all the
equipment and animals.I bought two lions from them. Later a circus named Continental from I believe Colombia arrived under a canvas 4-pole tent with a great show starring Kimba who worked lions without an arena.they only setup in the San Juan area. During and before this Jimmy Harrington had his large circus every year in either a building or ballpark. Called Circo Panamericano. Then came Circus Odyessy. That's all I can tell you and I hope in someway it may add to your journey of inquest. Kindest regards, Bruno Loyale, The Magic Circus of Samoa

101. Eloise Berchtold, March 10, 2004 - I am writing a book about my years with the circus. My idol was Eloise Berchtold. I can not find much about this wonderful animal trainer. I presented one of the cage acts she trained. Wild Animal Fantasy in the early 60s. Her elephant Koa killed her during the act in Canada. If anyone has any information or stories about her I would be most greatful to hear from them. I know she was born in Illinois(so was I). I would like to find where she is buried. (Koa also). Her friend Morgan Berry was killed a short time later. Thanks for any help. headalpha@yahoo.com. Respond to this message
Reply: March 13, 2004 - I believe that when Eloise Berchtold was working the elephant named Koa that she was John Cuneo's wife. However, Koa was not the culprit in her demise. It was Teak that killed her on May 5th, 1978 in Rock Forest, Quebec, while performing on the Gatini Circus. A paper Giovanni Iuliani presented at the 2002 Circus Historical Society convention in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was published under the title "Eloise Berchtold's Last Performance" in the November-December 2003 issue of Bandwagon (p. 36-39). Giovanni Iuliani is co-author with Claude Bordez of "Dernier Tour de Piste" that covers the last performance of Eloise Berchtold. The book also covers the animal training and brings pro-animal circus arguments in response to animal activist movements. Published by JCL, a French-Canadian publishing house. Not available in English. Postscript: Eloise Berchtold's body was creamated and shipped to Woodland, Washington. Morgan Berry spread her ashes on the farm. In June 1979 they found him dead in the barn next to an elephant named Budda.
Reply: May 30, 2004 - Koa, the male African elephant, died while on display at the Cincinnati Zoo. Eloise may have been born in IL but spent her childhood in Cincinnati and worked (volunteered?) at the Zoo. She is mentioned in Lenore Brandt's book, Monkeys as Pets. I believe she was still working Koa when she was training her mixed cage act at the Toledo Zoo in the early 1960's. Koa was becoming more difficult to handle and Eloise placed him with the Cincinnati Zoo as an exhibit animal.
Reply: 02 August, 2006 - Eloise trained me to take over "The Wild Animal Fantasy" in '57 at the Libertyville winter quarters. She also helped me with "The Paramount Bears" as her then husband, John Cuneo was in hospital with serious burns from an explosion of the motor cycle, used in the bear act. I in turn helped Eloise train Koa, who was just a baby. Eloise and I remained friends and worked many shows together even after she & John were divorced and I became wife #2. I have a couple of web photo's of Eloise & Koa taken at a show where Hugh O'brien was performing if they might be of interest. Patricia Clarke Jameson Cuneo
Reply: 18 June 2007 - Dear Camilo Gamboa, I currently own the property on the ridge high above Martins Island near the Columbia River. The local story is that Morgan Berry raised elephants and other exotic animals on about 80 acres here. I own about 30 acres of the original 80 acres if the story is true. Long time residents of this area claim that Packy the long time favorite draw to the Portland, Oregon Zoo was born here. They also say that Morgan Berry was killed by an elephant in the barn/holding pen of which the thick concrete walls are still intact. The original house of Morgan Berry is still being lived in. There is a new large sign that says "Elephant Farm." The property is about 4 miles south of Kalama, WA. Also I recently met a man by the name of Bob Youngs that lives nearby that said he dated a daughter of Morgan Berry many decades ago.
I would sure like to buy a copy of your book when it is completed. Any pictures of Morgan Berry that you could share by email would sure be appreciated. Also do you have any info Eloise Berchtold? Click this link to my web site if you want to see maps and pictures of the site. http://www.wolf-nail.com/donsviewlots/ My apologies if the rumors are not true. Best Regards, Donald E. Reply: 03 Sep 2007 - We lived in Toledo, OH, 1963 to 1966. We had three young girls, and visited the Toledo zoo about once a month.
Eloise performed at the amphitheater at the Toledo zoo. Her star was a young African male named Koa. She also used bears, including a Polar Bear named Zero, who rode a motorcycle.
In 1965 she had a show topper performance. Bears. A highly trained Arabian horse. Koa. And, a steel arena with lions and tigers,a large bear and an Aoudad. She brought the horse into the arena with a platform on his back. When the horse went under the bear's pedestal, it stepped down on the platform. The horse circled the arena, and the bear stepped back on its pedestal.
Koa was kept in the Zoo's elephant house, as were a couple of female Asian elephants that belonged to the zoo. One day on our visit we found Koa missing, and inquired of the keeper. He advised that Eloise had been working with him on the stage preparing for the coming summer performances, when he knocked her down. She rolled with the blow off the stage and into the orchestra pit. Koa stood at the edge of the stage and trumpeted, but did not attempt to step down. He had always been afraid of getting close to the edge.
Eloise knew the act was ended. It took several hours to drive him back to his stall. Eloise was a native of Cincinnati, and phoned the Cincinnati zoo. She told the director what had happened, and offered Koa to the Cincinnati zoo. He was accepted on the basis that he fitted into the Cincinnati zoo, but if he misbehaved he would be fed to the cats. With that understanding Koa was loaded on a truck and went south.
I have many times said that I thought Eloise was the best all-around animal trainer I ever watched. The news wire report of her death in the Grand Rapids Press said her male African elephant was stepping down from a drum just as Eloise was running in front of him from one side to the other, when she slipped or stumbled and fell under the descending foot. Then the elephant stood straddling her and would not allow anyone to get near her. There was no one else on the premises who knew much about elephants. Its owner was phoned, and he said he would be there as soon as possible, that they should kill the elephant if acted badly. The owner flew from Kansas. Eloise was dead. The elephant apparently did not attack her at all, but guarded her after the accident. Jim Irvine, jimirvinejd@earthlink.net
Reply: 16 May 2008 - Hello, I worked props when Eloise Berchtold was with Rudy Bros in the 70s. The weight of her cage sections almost busted my chops, it was a big deal when work had built me up to where I could handle one alone. Morgan was pretty much the elephant guy, she did cats and exotic bears in the same cage, lions, tigers, pumas, never saw anything like it. When Herbie, the old black mained African lion was sick, Eloise took her meals in his wagon. Heard Raunchy was the elephant that killed her, he did have the crazy red eye thing going, guess that was not true tho. ty, rob nickels
Reply: 22 May 2008 - I would like some details about the cat act presented or broken by Eloise Berchtold in the early 1960s. It had spotted leopards, at least one black
leopard, some large dogs claimed to have been wolves, and a zebra. I think the zebra may have been a horse painted up like a zebra. When was this act formed, where did it perform (I think one year on Kelly-Miller), and who were the various presenters besides Berchtold? What was the consist of the act as to various animals? What became of the act? Thanks, Richard Reynolds
Reply: 24 May 2008 - Mr. Reynolds: You should review some of the older posts on Buckles’ Blog, as I recall during a discussion of Eloise Berchtold’s animal training talents, one of the responders said she had been trained by Eloise, and again as I recall, I believe she said she worked this mixed act. I could be wrong, but you should definitely go back and find that posting. You may end up with a first-hand account of the act for your troubles, if you can find out who the blogger was! Neil Cockerline
Reply: 19 Aug 2008 - Greetings. Eloise is was my second cousin and I am trying to find out as much about her as I can. It seems history is a different story than what the "Family" story was. I never knew her death was so tragic. Family version was a little cleaner. All I know is I am proud to have such a person in my family line. I grew up in and live in Cincinnati and my Dad talk often about going over to his cousins house to watch her with her Bears. He has some very interesting memories of her. My Grandfather now deceased told me she helped set up the petting zoo at the Cincinnati Zoo. I have not been able to confirm this but that is what I was told. If you have any information on Eloise, please let me know. My name is Richard R. Kuertz and my email is rvjk714@aol.com. Thanks!
