200. Madeline del Ray, July 28, 2004 - I have several pictures of a woman whose name was Madeline del Ray. She was a trick shot and lion tamer in the late 1800's and perhaps into the 1900's. One picture has a name of Fortner? (possible photographer), Sterling, Colo. Another picture was in the SF Call paper on Feb 5, 1911 with Jimmy the lion. She lived at one time in San Francisco. Thanks, grmajo2@aol.com. Respond to this message

Reply: 22 November, 2006 - Dear Sir, I noticed your posting concerning a Madeline del Ray. It may be a very old posting. I am interested because my wife believes that she is her great granddaughter. We have a picture of her with a lion in San Francisco. My wife grew up in San Francisco. If you have any information about her it would be greatly appreciated. My email address is bbreitler@aol.com. Thank you. Bruce Breitler

199. Barnum and Bailey poster, July 28, 2004 - I have a Barnum and Bailey poster. The size is 22 by 28 inches. Refer to my last message #165. It's the clown with a tent in back ground. Do you think you could help with the value. Thanks for your help. Cassandra, Cassie24s@aol.com. Respond to this message

198. Peeler's Greater Shows, July 28, 2004 - I would be interested in any information, or guidance where to look, regarding "Peeler's Greater Shows" owned by R.M. Peeler and operating around 1907. Thanks, Richard Sills, Asheville, NC, r.sills@charter.net. Respond to this message

197. Circus Tivoli, July 28, 2004 - Hello Circus history. I am looking for information on a circus called Tivoli and would appreciate any info any one has or any posters. Ray Perkin, rayperkin@blueyonder.co.uk. Respond to this message
Reply: July 29, 2004 - J. Sergei Sawchyn, the former General Manager of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, is the man behind the concept of Circus Tivoli. The financing of this multi-million dollar venture was done through Richardson Securities of Canada. The circus trucks and trailers carried the same color scheme as Shell (a major refiner and gas station chain). It opened in April 1981 and had a short under canvas run. We can credit Sawchyn for re-inventing chinese acrobatic troupes when he played major arenas across Canada under the title of The Great Circus of China. Tarzan Zerbini benefited from Circus Tivoli when he purchased equipment and tents. Also, The Big Apple purchased equipment. Circus Tivoli lived a very short time yet while it existed it was the most beautiful circus in North America (and that was a quarter century ago). In 2002, J. Sergei Sawchyn was the key-note speaker at the CHS Convention in Toronto, Canada. Giovanni Iuliani, circusarchives@videotron.ca.
Reply: 10-Jan-05 - We have: Tivoli, Vesterbrogade, Copenhagen, Denmark. The 4 Bronetts (Goldkette) gave performances in Cirkus Schumann, Copenhagen and grandmother Elise Goudsmith gave performances in Tivoli in old days. Pleace write to Tivolis adress and ask if they will sent some circus informations to you. jetgold@webspeed.dk

Reply: 23 June, 2006 - Ray: I am a retired American musician who was hired in early 1981 as bandleader for Circus Tivoli. I appear in a 'staff/office' photo pretending I was playing my trumpet. I found your post on the circus history message board while doing some research prior to listing a Circus Tivoli program on Ebay. I was going to list for $5.00. I think $3.50 for shipping to Canada should be adequate. Regards, Bob Amato

Reply: 24 June, 2006 - Thank you for the reply's but the Circus Tivoli that I am looking for is from around the 1890s-1900. My new email is rayperkin@hotmail.com, Ray Perkin

196. Stowe Bros. Circus, July 28, 2004 - I am looking for any information that anyone might have on the Stowe Bros. Circus. They also go by the many names of: John Stowe's Western Circus, John Stowe's Southern Circus, J. Stowe's Railroad Circus. I have looked all through the web sites, and I can't find anything listed. Thank you for any information that is provided. Laurel, MI, Robertlee980@aol.com. Respond to this message
Reply: August 01, 2004 - You can find the history of the Stowe Bros. Circus by looking in the Bandwagon index for three articles from 1985-1987 that I researched. The articles are still available in back issues, and can be obtained through the address on this website. The only place the Stowe Circus material shows up is a small four page article in Half Century Circus Reviews by Charles Bernard, the New York Clipper and a variety of newspaper advertisements. John Polacsek, Detroit, MI.
Reply: October 31, 2004 - I'm also interested in the Stowe Brothers Circus for genealogy purposes. I am working with a descendant of one of the brothers, Henry Harrison "Hat" Stowe. Have you had any luck? I have copies of the articles by John Polacsek if you have not gotten them yet. Valerie Stowe Kennison, FL, valken25@bellsouth.net.

Reply: 24 April, 2006 - I have a picture of my great grandfather father George L. Behrens who would currently be around 120 – 140 years old. He’s surrounded by a few Indians and some other western type looking individuals all on horseback. At the very bottom of the picture you can see faintly see a hand written note that says “Stowe Bros. Wild West Show”. I don’t know where the picture was taken or when for that matter. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Jon, jressler@alltel.net

Reply: 20 Sep 2007 - Hi, I also found an article from the Berrien Springs (MI) Journal-Era published on Oct. 12, 1994 by Robert Myers with a picture of Will Stowe in a costume like a harlequin. I would be interested in learning more about the circus for my research. Email me. Marian Matyn, Archivist, Clarke Historical Library, CMU. Marian.matyn@cmich.edu

Reply: 22 Sep 2007 - I have a letter from John F. Stowe, John Frederick Stowe's son: John senior was born in Dec. 12, 1858 in Wauseon, Ohio and died in Niles, Michigan. I have an article about his performaces held in Hartford, Ct. He performed "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for Hariet Beecher Stowe and her husband, Calvin Stowe. There is a book, In Old Detroit written by George Stark about Uncle tom's Cabin and it is an obit of John F. Stowe sr. and quite lengthy. I also have another article taken from either the Niles or So. Bend newspaper dated April 23, 1922, about his performance in Hartford. My father John Norris always told us we were related to the Stowe family. Harriet's father was a minister and taught at the Lane seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio and that is where she met Calvin Stowe. She is his second wife. My great grandmother was married to John F. sr and traveled with him to Cuba with the circus. She was left with children to raise of which my grandmother was one. He supposedly left her for more of the circus world. I would be happy to send you copies of the articles I have. I am taking a course on Geneaology and want to know more about Mary Allen Stowe myself. She is buried in St. Joseph's cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio and so is her daughter, granddaughter and several other family members. We live in Connecticut, but will be leaving on 9/24 for Ohio for a reunion. I hope this helps you. Susan Venberg

Reply: 14 Dec 2007 - Henry Harrison "Hat" Stow, the "India Rubber Man" in the Stow Brothers Circus was my g.grandfather. I have tried for almost a decade to find the link between my g.grandfather and Calvin Ellis Stowe. (My mother said my grandpa claimed that Harriet Beecher Stowe was his great aunt. My grandpa & John F. Stowe Sr. were first cousins.) I have traced my Stowe line back to Elizabeth Stow, the mother of the 5 Stow circus brothers. Elizabeth was born in NY in 1797. She was widowed at age 40 - 42. Her youngest child was Harrison born in 1837. Elizabeth died April 10, 1857, and is buried in Ottokee, OH (Fulton Co). Her headstone says, Betesy, wife of "J" Stow. My "brick wall" has been trying to find out who "J" Stow was! I'm very interested in Susan Venberg's reply and her comment about having a letter from John F. Stowe Jr. regarding John Sr.'s performance of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for Calvin & H.B. Stowe. I have many articles from newspapers and in magazines stating that John F. Stowe was H.B.Stowe's "grand nephew," that she was his "great aunt, illustrious relative, distant relative," etc. IF this was true the relationship would have to come through "J" STOW, the father of the 5 circus brothers. After years of research and coming up with nothing, I'm questioning this relationship and wondering if it wasn't just an advertising gimmick! However, that doesn't lessen my desire at all to find the name of my g.g.grandfather, "J" Stowe! Susan Venburg, does the letter you received from J.F.Stowe Jr. confirm a relationship with H.B. Stowe? If anyone can give me some direction on this, it'll be greatly appreciated! Thank You! pbyochim@sbcglobal.net.

195. Cutes or Chotes Circus, July 28, 2004 - I am trying to find information about a circus CUTES or CHOTES of San Francisco approx. 1900-1920. petermanley30@hotmail.com. Respond to this message

Reply: August 09, 2004 - I have an article that was in the SF Call pm Feb 5, 1911 about Madeline Delray who had a lion that was born at the Chutes July 26, 1910 who lived at the Chutes during the day where he occupied a cage in the zoo. He went home with her at night. She was a lion tamer and I figured that the Chutes was an area of some kind of entertainment. If you find out anyother information about what it was, I would appreciate hearing about it. The woman was my husband's grandmother and we know very little about her. grmajo2@aol.com

194. King Brothers Circus, July 28, 2004 - I traveled in early 1970/71 in Florida, Alabama and Louisiana with King Brothers Circus as a roustabout. I saw them again in Taunton, MA around 1977 or so? Virgil had been promoted to gang manager by that time. I can find no reference to King Brothers anywhere, or if they still exist. Can you help me? Thank You for any assistance you can provide. Sincerely, Peter Harris, D.C., pkharris2@comcast.net. Respond to this message
Reply: September 04, 2004 - I saw your inquiry about the King Bros. Circus on the Circus Historical Society website today. The King Bros. Circus you refer to was actually owned by the Acme Circus Corporation with Frank McCloskey as president. They also owned and operated Sells and Gray Circus and the giant Clyde Beatty- Cole Bros. Circus. King Bros. and Sells and Gray both came off the road for good the same year Frank McCloskey died. I'll have to look up the exact year but I'm pretty sure it was late 1978 because the Beatty show has all the shows elephants the next year. The King Bros. title has popped up from time to time but the King Bros. ( Howard and Floyd ) were the namesakes. They had many a show on the road for over 40 years from Gentry Bros. Circus in 1927 and Walter L. Main Circus in 1978 to the old Cole Bros. Circus equipment they leased in 1955 to call King Bros. Circus. The season only lasted through late Sept. and all the equipment and elephants were sold to Paul Kelly in Peru, Indiana. Maybe this helps a little. If you need more help just ask. Best wishes, Bob Cline, SC, fivetiger@marlboroelectric.net.

193. Lone Survivor of Saint Pierre, July 28, 2004 - The entire city of St. Pierre in Martinique was destroyed in 1902 with a lost of over 28,000 souls. Louis-Auguste Cyparis was the only survivor. He toured with Barnum & Bailey Circus as the "Lone Survivor of Saint Pierre." Searching for the exact year(s) he toured with the Greatest Show On Earth. circusarchives@videotron.ca. Reply: 12 February, 2006 - Hello, I'm a French teacher in Martinique. I'm looking information about the same subject! We can stay tuned. G.B., gilbert.bernabe.77@wanadoo.fr

Reply: 11 March, 2006 - After a long period of absence I discover on the CHS Discussion Board that Gilbert Bernabe is seeking information about Louis-Auguste Cyparis, who was the only living survivor of the city of St. Pierre in Martinique when it was completely destroyed with a lost of 28,000 souls in 1902. In 2004, I participateed in a guided tour of the doomed city and also visited a small museum that offered very little information on the prisoner that livid to tell about that terrible moment. Since Barnum & Bailey was touring France when the Mount Pelee volcano released a deadly gas that spread at a speed surpassing 400 kilometers an hour. It killed instantly almost the entire population with the exception of two people, one dying shortly after and the other living through the ordeal. J.A. Bailey quickly decided that this survivor would be a worthy attraction and sent a agent to hire him. In 1903, the Barnum & Bailey Circus was back in the United States and started it's tour featuring the man as a major sideshow attractions. Alas, Louis-Auguste Cyparis has a drinking problem en ends up in jail after having knifed a circus worker. This ended his short lived circus career and we lose track of him, While in Martinique, the St. Pierre Museum said that the Greatest Show On Earth came to Martinique (instead of an agent representing Barnum & Bailey) and that after working for the circus that he went to work on the Panama Canal. In 2002, France-Antilles published a special commemoration issue that covered the volcanic eruption (a newspaper edition that I have so far failed to obtain a copy). Reply: 24 May, 2006 - From Circus Scrapbook, No. 8 (Oct), 1930, p. 30. "Ludger Sylbaris Sole Survivor of St. Pierre. Born at Fort-de-France, in 1874, in many respects this man was the most unique person upon the face of the earth. No greater human curiosity has ever breathed the breath of life. With its characteristic enterprise, Barnum and Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth sought him out and induced him to come to this country and be place on exhibition in 1902. Consular certificates from the governer of Martinique, the Mayor of Fort-de-France, and other documentary evidence as to his identity, history and genuineness were secured; and everything else necessary to prove that he was unquestionably the only survivor among the 40,000 victims of Mt. Pelee. Covered with scars from burns, that had discolored one-half of his epidermis from head to heels, from which he suffered in the awful solitude of four days and three nights in a living tomb of molten lava, in an underground prison cell, in the prison of St. Pierre. He was rescued by Father Mary, Victor Emmanuel and Elius Nelcha. Note: no source was listed for this information. A quick search of newspaperarchives.com gave the name of Samson Ludger as the sole survivor of St. Pierre, arriving at New York in February 1903. J. Griffin

192. Johnny J. Jones, July 28, 2004 - I am interested in learning more about the Johnny J. Jones Carnival, as my grandmother and grandfather traveled with this carnival during the 1920's and into the 1930's. My mother specifically remembers that they traveled from "Maine to Cuba" during the year, then came to visit her in Atlanta, where she lived with her grandmother. Any information you have regarding this show would be appreciated! Thanks, Tom Tisdale, tomtisdale@msn.com. Respond to this message
Reply: August 07, 2004 - Bob Goldsack, Nashua, NH wrote and published a book about the Johnny J. Jones Exposition. It may still be in print. It includes some route information. Fred Dahlinger.
Reply: 05-Feb-05 - Have just a tidbit of info for you. In Bunker Hill Revisited, Vol.5, (which is a series of books compiling articles from Bunker Hill, IL newspapers) there is a mention of the Johnny J. Jones show. On January 16, 1914, a letter was printed in the newspaper. It doesn't say who wrote it, or give a date, but the letter goes on about people from Bunker Hill that the writer kept running into on a trip to Florida.
"...the only person I recognized or saw on the dock at St. Petersburg was Fred Seim of Bunker Hill. Of course Fred obscured most of the scenery for miles around. He was looking fat and sassy as ever. He and his sister Alma were with Johnny J. Jones' show exhibiting there."
I have a letter written to a relative in 1965, where the author writes "Yes, I remember the fat Seim girl who joined the circus but as I remember it she was called Baby Alma." Have you ever come across anything about Baby Alma? KATHYDAVIS1117@msn.com
Reply: 03 April, 2005 - My Grandfather, William Enterline, made ice cream and soft drinks in Milton, PA. He had a picture in his office about 10 inches wide and 48 inches long. At the bottom it states "Johnny J Jones Exposition, Dayton, Ohio June 25, 1925". The picture includes 300 plus people and 3 elephants. My family has always said there is a man that is in the picture twice. Since it was taken in sections he ran from one end to the other, so he is on both ends of the picture. I have not been able to find this man but I am still looking. I just took ownership of this picture this past weekend and am now looking for more information about Johnny J Jones. Thought you might find this interesting. w.newburg@att.net
Reply: 20 July, 2005 - I saw your note at the circus website. I have a book called the Johnny J Jones circus and exposition. A patient gave it to me for giggles. John J Jones D.C.

191. Nashua, NH 1888, July 28, 2004 - My g-grandfather was playing under a circus train c1888 in Nashua, New Hampshire and lost his leg when the train moved. His son tells me that his family received a settlement from the train company which he used to pay for his tuition at Harvard University and Law School. Does anyone know where I might find more information about the circus in Nashua c1888? Kevin Farley, kfarley@goffstown.k12.nh.us. Respond to this message
Reply: August 07, 2004 - The best method to establish the circus identity would be to scan the Nashua, NH newspapers. A human interest story involving such an accident would have been covered. The Barnum & Bailey show played there July 23, 1888, followed by the Adam Forepaugh outfit on July 31, 1888. You might want to check the newspapers immediately after those dates for coverage. Further coverage might be contained within the season's route books, if the accident involved either of these circuses. Another place to look would be in the business files, if preserved, of the railroads that moved the circus. They likely made the settlement, having been responsible for the actual movement of the circus cars. Fred Dahlinger.

190. Poster - Ringling Bros., July 28, 2004 - I have a poster of the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey "for 33 days starting Wednesday night April 6th" but there is no date on it. Would anyone know which year this took place - it also has a few tears and is 30" x 20." Any help would be appreciated. Mary, almeyosser@sympatico.ca. Respond to this message
Reply: July 29, 2004 - The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, played the Madison Square Garden in 1949, from Wed. Apr. 6 through May 8 (33 days). It then moved to The Boston Garden May 10-15 and then started under canvas in the Nation's Capital on May 17-21. This was when RBBB was run by John Ringling North. 189. Forepaugh Poster, July 10, 2004 - I am looking for information, particularly the age, on a poster I own from Adam Forepaugh's Aggregation Circus featuring Jeannette Bedeau, Famous Equestrienne. It is 34"x26" and is in an old frame with a paper label from the company that framed it in New York. I am reasonably cetain that the piece is vintage and not a reproduction. There are no marks visible and since it is paper sealed on the back, I do not want to remove it from the frame. Thanks. George Farnham animalfa@ix.netcom.com. Respond to this message

188. Circus collection appraisers, dealers, July 10, 2004 - On behalf of a family member who has a large circus collection I am seeking information about potential appraisers and dealers. 187. John Ivan, Cannon Ball performer, July 10, 2004 - I am looking for any information on a human cannon ball preformer. I believe his name was John Ivan, at least that is what I knew him as. I was only a little girl of about 3 years old but can remember being in the cab of his truck when he and my mother would perform in the area of Roanoke,Virginia in the late 1950's. Can you help? 186. Morrill - Strongman, July 10, 2004 - I am looking for information regarding any circuses that may have been touring in the IL/OH area sometime between about 1860 and 1878 or so. Specifically, I am searching for a circus strongman named Morrill. His first name may have been Stenson, Stencel, or something similar. He may have died in some kind of circus accident. His son, Clarence A. Morrill, was born in OH in 1860. His son, Harry Bernard Morrill, was born in IL in 1863. His wife's name was Caroline E. In the 1880 OH census she is listed as the wife of Charles W. Wick. Clarence A. and Harry Morrill are listed as step-sons. There may also have been an older son named George Morrill but he was not living with his mother's family in 1880. Did the term "strongman," as it related to a circus of that time period, indicate a performer or someone who had a different kind of job? Did the circuses of that era tour through multiple states or stay closer to their winter camp? Any information in regards to this would be greatly appreciated. Rose M. Sellick, Utah, NorseNames@aol.com. Respond to this message

185. Ringling Bros. Winter Quarters, July 08, 2004 - I have some questions concerning the Ringling Brothers winter quarters. 1. Which year did they leave Baraboo 1918 or 1919? 2. Where did they go from Baraboo: a. Bridgeport Conn, b. to Sarasota Florida, c. other. 3. Did the winter quarters open in Sarasota in 1927 or earlier? My research to date is giving me confusing signals about this trail so these are my clues. bakeapplefarm@hotmail.com. Respond to this message
Reply: August 07, 2004 - The Ringling circus left Baraboo in the spring of 1918 and never returned. They did continue to own the winter quarters properties into the 1930s. In the fall of 1919 both the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows and the Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth went into the latter's winter quarters in Bridgeport, CT, which were used for the first time in the winter of 1881-1882. The Bridgeport site remained in use through the spring of 1927, with Sarasota being used for the first time the coming winter. When the Ringlings bought B&B in 1907, it included a lease on the quarters property. They extended it for, I believe, two terms of ten years each. The Sarasota property had been used for other purposes prior to being acquired by RBBB. Fred Dahlinger.

184. CWM Photo, July 06, 2004 - I was just at the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, WI. They had a brief article on the wall about a horse that was standing on a platform, which was carried by 12 men. Then the horse was lifted with a balloon to the top of the tent (with a rider on it). There were some pictures too. If I recall, this occurred in 1911. I had hoped to find out more info on the web, but can not remember the name of the horse. Does anyone know? (I think it mentioned the Cole Bros. Circus.) buckskin@acegroup.cc. Respond to this message
Reply: August 07, 2004 - The horse on a platform carried by men seems to fit the "Silver King" story, with Ringling in the 1890s. The balloon horse was a later feature on Barnum & Bailey. Fred Dahlinger.

183. Thomas Dean, July 01, 2004 - I'm trying to find out information on a Thomas Dean who was a member of the Sells Floto circus around 1910 or later. He was a trapezes artist, then a clown after an injury. thanks C.magruder3@aol.com. Respond to this message

182. Jules and Ernestine Trudeau, June 28, 2004 - Jules (or Julius) and Ernestine Trudeau were circus performers from Montreal, Canada around the late 1800's. I haven't a clue what circus they toured with, although family said that they traveled in the US, probably north east from Chicago to New York. Evidently they did different things, but mainly family tradition was that they were a high wire act. Jules (or Julius) and Ernestine Trudeau's two children also participated, Peter and Jenny (Jeanne), possible in other acts. Any information or help in researching further would be greatly appreciated. Contact Linda at lmeyers@speedeenet.com. Thanks! Respond to this message

180. Elizebeth Santo Traveling Carnival, June 24, 2004 - My grandparents came from Catanzaro Italy and had a traveling circus. I think it was called the Elizebeth Santo Traveling Carnival (Or Family Show). My grandparents last name was originally Pileggi. I think they came here around 1920 and toured on the east coast. 179. Elephant buried Pontiac MI, June 23, 2004 - I once heard that a circus elephant was buried under the parking lot of the now Summit Place mall in Pontiac Michigan, the mall used to be called the Pontiac mall. Any information that this is true. Danny Subjeck, Howell, Michigan, dasubjeck@comcast.net. Respond to this message
Reply: July 28, 2004 - The same question has been asked often of the Wisconsin State Fair. Perhaps this is a common tent circus "myth." Wisconsin's story has it that an unknown circus at an unknown date and year had an elephant die after the last performance and it was "secretly" buried before the circus left the Wisconsin State Fair Park during the dark. Although a great story, after 192 years on the present site and many excavations for new buildings and roadways, not a single bone of any size has ever been found. Only pictures and sworn testimony could convince me an elephant could be successfully and secretly buried anywhere without being detected by smell or the size of the mound needed to leave the elephant behind! I would be interested to learn if this myth exists in any of the other, former tent circus cities. Jerry Zimmerman - Wis. State Fair Historian, Jerdadzim@cs.com.
Reply: September 04, 2004 - In answer to this question, it is absolutely TRUE. The elephant was called Little Jennie. She was a female Asian elephant on the Cole Bros. Circus from 1940 until it closed in 1954. She was leased to the King Bros. Circus for one season in 1955 and then sold with the rest of the Cole bros. elephant herd to Paul Kelly in Peru, Indiana. Paul and Dorothy Kelly performed their elephants for years doing shrine circus dates and carnival spots as well. One of these dates was in 1972 when Little Jennie died unexpectedly at their date here at the mall. Hope this helps. Bob Cline, SC, fivetiger@marlboroelectric.net.

178. Godfrey's Circus, June 22, 2004 - I am looking for any information on Godfrey's circus in and around the 1890 - 1920's. Caroline Godfrey WILLS b. Manchester 23 Nov 1844
There was also a boy - Percy Moss WILLS b. Newport, Monmouthshire 18 Aug 1890.
The 1901 Census for Glossop, Derbyshire records each of the 4 girls as Professional Singer and Dancer, lodging with the family of Herbert Boardman. I have very scant information about their careers and never heard of a Circus connection. Reply: June 19, 2004 - A quick look-up in Slout's Olympians did not turn up a Frank Robinson Circus. A Frank M. Robinson (1850? - 1882) was a part owner in the John Robinson Circus circa 1882. Parkinson's Directory of American Circuses 1793-2000 did not list a Frank Robinson's Circus title, though I didn't check the cross-references for a Frank Robinson's involvement in a circus with a different title. There were a number of Robinson's who were proprietors in circuses in the 1800s: John, James, Eugene, "Yankee" (Fayette).

175. Photograph of Circus People, June 19, 2004 - I have a question regarding a photograph that I recently acquired. It is a "multi-photograph" -- a collage -- of circus people, and it appears to have been printed in the twenties or thirties. There are literally hundreds of people's pictures (just head shots), and the only ones I can identify are P.T. Barnum and J.A. Bailey (their photos are captioned) and the Ringling Bros. The photograph is captioned "Multi-Photograph of Circus People, Copyrighted by Chas. Andress, 434 Douglas Boulevard, Chicago, Ill." I guess I am wondering if anyone knows who Chas. Andress is and whether or not anyone is familiar with this type of photograph so that I can get information about when it was printed and, I guess, whether it has any value beyond just being fascinating to look at. 171. One finger hand stands, June 16, 2004 - As a young boy growing up in Cleveland Ohio, my brother and I attended several circus shows including Ringling Bros., Clyde Beaty Cole Bros. and the Cleveland Grotto Circus. There was a performer that did a number of one finger hand stands that to this day, I have never seen anything come close to equaling. He performed in a Tuxedo with white gloves and did hand stands on a walking cane, a chair, and at the end of his performance, climbed a tower with a lighted globe or ball on top. There, he did the one finger handstand on a chair balanced on the ball. It was the most amazing balancing act I have seen in my 62 years on this earth. There were skeptics in the audience that thought he might have some kind of brace under the gloves until the end of the act while in the spotlight, he removed them and threw them in the air. I would certainly appreciate any history of that individual that you might provide. Thank you kindly, Robert Swanson, Ohio, OTROCKETRODS@aol.com. Respond to this message
Reply: July 28, 2004 - Yes, I have been searching on this one, too, friend. I am 68, and saw this act on our first Philco 10" TV around 1949 or so, and was flabbergasted when I saw it. I remember seeing the posters of this well-dressed man standing on his finger, at times his cane, and thought it was some kind of joke. It burned itself into my memory and have tried to track any info, like yourself. Well, let's keep hunting at this young age, and should I come up with anything, I'll save your name in my index to contact you. Good luck! Too bad we don't have shows on TV like the old days, right? Now THAT was a reality show!! James Hanley, jamest2036@earthlink.net.
Reply: July 29, 2004 - See the CHS Message Board Archive #56 - you are thinking of "UNUS" - Franz Furtner. Joe Parker.
Reply: August 06, 2004 - Unus was one of the top-billed performers of Ringling Bros. Barnum Bailey circus. An article with photos appears in an issue of Life magazine from the late 40's or early 50's. He retired from circus life in the early to mid 50's. Many remember his ability to stand on one finger, extended from a gloved hand... and then, with theatrical gestures and back on his feet, slowly remove the glove to the amazement of all who were sure, a few minutes earlier, that he had some piece of wood or other artifical aid to enable him to do his finger-stand. fred.merriman@citigroup.com.
Reply: 08 August, 2005 - I am sorry to disappoint many a true believer, but indeed, Unus had a "brace" in his one-finger-stand glove. As did everyone else who did the trick. (He was not the only one, neither, I believe, the first one - but he was certainly the best advertised one!). The "system" is actually as simple as it is obvious but, as in any good magic act, misdirection is everything: taking off his glove (which he never showed close-up to the audience!) makes you think that it is the proof that it was empty; but just because four fingers out of five are normal, you do not pay attention to the one that is actually rigid - the index - and, anyway, you are too far away to see the difference!
The the index of the glove covered a small thimble, to which a balancing-cane handle was attached. Unus had his finger in the thimble, and held on to the cane handle, which was inside the glove. His finger was not "on" the globe on which he balanced, but into a hole atop of it - or, more accurately, the thimble was in this hole. So Unus actually did the equivalent a one-arm stand on a balancing cane. This indeed doesn't take anything away from his genuine talent as a hand balancer, and his remarkable sense of showmanship.
I have seen the trick performed by several hand-balancers in Europe, but never with the same flair and showmanship. Furthermore, in European circuses, where the public is close to the ring and the performer, the trick is also too visible to fool a knowledgeable audience. At Cirque Medrano, in Paris, I saw a hand-balancer who did the trick without a glove and without the cane handle: he just had a thimble that covered his entire index (so that he couldn't bend it), which he placed in a bottle-like support. He didn't try to hide anything and clearly showed the thimble to the audience. That was a truly great trick! Unfortunately, this balancer (whose name eludes me right now) lacked the personality and showmanship that would have allowed him to make a great international career. Dominique Jando

Reply: 14 Mar 2008 - On Cole Bros. Circus the one finger stand was performed by Lothar. His rigging was later purchased by Harry Dubsky, Jr. who continued to perform the act. Chuck Werner. chuckwerner1@cfl.rr.com

170. William P. Hall, June 16, 2004 - Can someone please provide a brief biographical summary of William P. Hall, Missouri's "Mr. Circus"? Thank you. Marks_Ebay@msn.com. Respond to this message
Reply: June 26, 2004 - Bandwagon Magazine has done many articles on William Hall and his Circus Brokerage in Lancaster, Mo. My father worked for Hall off and on starting in the mid-1920's and even after his death for his family until all the elephants were disposed of in 1935. Twenty one of the elephants being sold to Zack Terrell and Jess Adkins. I was born in Lancaster that year and from what pictures I have seen, it was not a glamorous place. My dad said there might be as many as thirty elephants in the barn and never more than a hand full of elephant men. Hay was gathered out of the field by hand and transported by a wagon pulled by two mules. The same mules pulled a water wagon to the railroad yards to be filled at the water tank and brought back to water the stock. The story goes that Hall wandered into Lancaster as a youngster in the dead of winter half frozen and with only burlap bags on his feet. He managed to get a job at a livery stable for $4 a month. Hall was taken to a Doctor shortly thereafter who discovered that his feet had been frozen and several toes were gangrenous and must be amputated at the cost of $2 a toe. Realizing that this would constitute a months pay he promptly took a wood cheisel and popped them off himself. It was said that he was illiterate. My father said that he often boasted that the only day he ever wasted in his life was the day he spent in school. The Bandwagon articles seem to debunk this. In any even it wasn't long before William P. Hall owned the livery stable, became a wealthy horse trader and made a fortune selling mules for use in the Boer War. His entry into the Circus Industry came about by selling baggage horses to circuses forclosing when the notes weren't paid. This evolved into buying and selling exotic animals, equipment and eventually complete circuses. BUCKLESW@TAMPABAY.rr.com

169. Terrell Jacobs, June 14, 2004 - I would like some information on Ringling Bros/Barnum and Bailey circus poster I have had for about 25 or 30 years. It's approx. 36" wide and 26" high and it shows Terrell Jacobs "The Lion King' in his white shirt and pants, black bow tie, belt and knee high boots surrounded by about 40 male lions all growling, snarling and such. The poster reads "Terrell Jacobs the Lion King presenting the worlds most sensational group of jungle bred performers." I haven't been able to find any such posters on the Internet although I did find a reproduction print of Terrell Jacobs with 14 black panthers. I have attempted to find info on Terrell Jacobs as well and have not found much. I'm intrigued regarding both Mr. Jacobs and the poster. He lived from 1903 to 1957 according to a photo of his headstone. From what did he die? He was only 54! It's my understanding he was a Senior and he had a son as a Junior. From what I have gathered the poster is likely from 1938 to 1940 as I believe that is the time in which Mr. Jacobs was with RBBB. What might a value be for an original poster like this? My wife just had it professionally framed for our anniversary and spent nearly $200.00 to have it done but it was well worth it! It will make a great heirloom to pass down. Any info as to either would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! Barrett Smith, Florida, bsmith416@tampabay.rr.com. Respond to this message
Reply: June 17, 2004 - See answer to inquiry #165. The Terrell Jacobs poster was sold as stock item P-11 and dated 1935 in the 1977 RBBB program. The size of the poster sold was 23 1/2 by 36 1/4, very close to what your size is, and the text reads the same as what you have on yours. Since you have had the item for 25 - 30 years it would fall within the production range from 1977, and sold for $2.00. As long as you enjoy the poster, it was well worth the price of framing it. Reply: July 28, 2004 - My name is David Pippenger living in Elkhart, IN. My father was a good friend of Mr. Jacobs. My dad used to take me to Peru, In. to see Mr. Jacobs and his animals. I recall at the age of 5 years going into the cage with Mr. Jacobs and a lion named Sheba. I also remember my father and Mr. Jacobs talking about his wife taking his elephants as a divorce settlement. Mr. Jacobs gave me two circus ponies for our farm. Their names were Carl and Bill. My father took me to Chicago in about 1950 to see the RBBB circus. I got to meet William Boyd and Terrell Jacobs there. I think they were also friends. My father was killed in an auto accident in 1951 so my circus days ended. I would get Christmas cards from him for awhile after my father's death. I have found out that Mr. Jacobs had a son and daughter. The son has a small circus in Arizona. The daughter played Tinkerbell at Disney World. I would love to find a poster like you have. I have bid on e-bay a couple times. Nice talking to you, Dave, rotopeep@verizon.net.

I was raised in North Manchester, Indiana and my father, Charles Endress, trained for a while in the 1940's with Terrill Jacobs to be a relief lion tamer for him. Consequently I visited many of Jacobs performances when he was in the Peru, Indiana area. My father knew the cats and I remember his talking about Sheba. My aunt who also knew Jacobs sent me a letter while I was living in Germany in 1957 informing me that Jacobs had died of a heart attack in Germany while touring with his act there. His grave is near those of my paternal grandparents in a graveyard in Wabash, Indiana and have photos of it. I remember seeing the Jacobs poster while attending a Ringling Bros. circus in Washington, D.C. several years ago and wish I had bought it. I have not been able to find another. n.a.n.c.y@comcast.net.

Reply: 03 August, 2006 - I believe it was either '55 or '56 when working in Cuba with the Gaby, Fo-Fo & Miliki circus, I had the good fortune to meet Terrell Jacobs. He was kind enough to teach me how to work the "big cat act" in between shows. In fact he was the one to also teach me how to handle the whip. I have a couple of photo's taken in the arena. After the season ended I was stranded in Cuba without an exit visa and the country was in turmoil as Castro was about to take over. Finally I was allowed to leave and I made a deal with Terrell to escort the animals over to Palm Beach in exchange for my passage. He didn't want to travel with the animals (the reason I will keep secret unless to close family members) I used my experience with Terrell to go on and take over "The Wild Animal Fantasy" & "The Paramount Bears." I would be happy to hear from any old circus friends & fans. Patricia Jameson (Cuneo) patc@rfci.net

Reply: 03-Feb-05 - Dan, saw that you are looking for info. On Count Desmonds,s.w. Count and I used to work clubs together I did knife throwing around my girl back then and also swallowed swords, as did Count. His real name is Ed Benjamin and a few years ago he settled into Wyalusing,Pa. Living with or maybe married a nurse. He used to send me yearly Christmas card but I lost track of him as I always tried to get him to come back on the road with me to work my shows (I have several grind shows). Might be able to get a listing on him thru phone info. For Ed Benjamin. I run into his brother every few years here in the Binghamton, N.Y. area. (I live in Vestal,N.Y.) not too far from Wyalusing,Pa.
Count and I used to work Circus Bartok some many years ago when his girlfriend then went by the name of Princess Eustacia-fire eater. I last saw here at least 20 years ago - she had left Count and hooked up with a friend of mine who was a candy butcher on RBBB Circus, his name was Frankie Lane.
I have photo of me and Count and Princess at a club after we did the show we are at a table having a drink - if I can find it!!! I have boxes of news stories covering my own shows over the last 40 years - I am 52 and started in 1966 swallowing swords back on the Beatty-Cole Circus when Fransis Doran was the s.w. there - a bit later The Baron took over as s.w. there.
I will try to get ahold of Count for you as this spurs me just to get him over to the house to visit after all these years!! I open my season mid april with three of my shows -giant snake show, giant rat show, and illusion show where I throw knives and hawks around my wife Lori and do old blade box act with a chain saw. Once in awhiule I may swallow swords to help build the tip but basically haven't swallowed swords in at least 10 years -my wife of 6 years still wants me to show her as my one remaining sword is here with my other props!
Anyway - If I get ahold of Count I will put him in touch with you by phone, e-mail or letter, I'll do what I can to locate him to help you contact with him. Me and Count go WAY BACK!!! Later. Rick Dennis, hotdennis1@msn.com

165. Barnum & Bailey poster, June 11, 2004 - I need some help getting value of a poster I found at auction. Its a Barnum and Bailey poster with a clown and a tent in the background. It's from 1917. You can tell this poster is very old and it's in a wood frame. Here is a link to a poster that is the same as mine but it's a mirror image to my poster: http://www.buynsellit.com/displayitem.cgi?item=8048178. If you have any info or a place i could get some info it would be of great help. Thanks, cassandra sorrells, cassie24s@aol.com. Respond to this message
Reply: June 17, 2004 - Saying that your poster is a mirror image of the one that was on the web site you referenced would then mean that it is a reproduction and not from 1917 based on the image that is shown. The first thing that you need to determine - is it is a copy of a 1917 image or the real item produced in 1917. Posters from 1917 would be in two sizes - a half sheet 22 by 28 inches, and a one sheet that is 28 by 42 inches. Anything between these two stock sizes or an odd size is usually a reproduction. If there is a stock number on the bottom, P-5 and the date 1917 the RBBB company produced the poster in 1977, and printed them 23 1/2 by 36 1/4 inches. If this is the case it is a copy of the original 1917 artwork and sold for $2.00 in 1977 as advertised in the RBBB circus program. John Polacsek, Detroit, Michigan

Reply: 17 November, 2005 - Circus movie fans, I saw the question, if there were any circus movies made other than the "Greatest Show on Earth". I have amateur 16mm movies that were taken of Grotto Circus acts in Cleveland Ohio somewhere between the twenties and mid fourties, (my guess). Not exactly what you asked about but close. It looks to me as if they were private showings for the individual making the movie because they were made outside without bystanders watching. Or, maybe some of the acts of Grotto Circus were performed outside. I've look at about 35% of the footage and they include acts such as tight rope walking, trained dogs, trained horses, trained seals. These also include short shots of other acts intermixed with these. There is more yet unwatched film that I will eventually watch. I wanted to post this email to let those that have an interest know that this footage exists and as I view more of this history, I will post updates. At some point I will get this history on CD. Reply: 20 February, 2007 - Sorry for this late insertion. 2 titles come to mind that seemed to be pretty interesting to me, one from the early 60's and one a bit later. "Ring of Fear" actually starred Clyde Beatty! And I found it to be an interesting if a bit too psycholgical a movie. A mental patient gets involved and causes a lot of mess. He's the ringmaster! Same plot was used in "The Big Circus" an Irwin Allen Production featuring Victor Mature, as the owner of GREAT WONDER CIRCUS. Gilbert Roland as a wire walker challenged to go across Niagara falls (with the shakes)(Bad special effects, too) Rhonda Fleming (HOO HAH! in those days!) and Peter Lorre as a Clown ala Emmett Kelly. Villian was David Nelson! (Who actually learned Trapese, and toured the act. (See #212) I was their light man for a week one summer in the late 60's. If I think of any more, I'll let you know. R.T. 163. Ringling 1904-16, Equestrienne/Coronet musician, June 08, 2004 - Author seeking information on Violet (Vi) Emma Hofer Roop, equestrienne bareback rider with Ringling sometime between 1904-1916; also performed in highwire act. Also, Bernis (Bernie) Roop, coronet player in circus band, same time period. Just as they were about to rejoin the circus in 1916, their trunks full of costumes and his coronet were destroyed in a devastating flood in Dayton, therefore ending their careers. All photos of them were subsequently destroyed. In addition, I have a few research questions:
1) Are there books or other sources I can be pointed to that focus on circus bands?
2) Regarding Fred Bradna, Equestrian Director and Ringmaster: Besides the book he wrote (which I just found out about), does anyone know if there are family or an estate that can be contacted for further information? I'm interested in the years between 1913-1916. 3) Is it possible to get the Ringling route schedule, in the Dayton, OH area, between the years 1904 - 1916?
Thank you much for any help you can offer. Anne Davison, mattanne@cox.net, California. Respond to this message
Reply: September 01, 2004 - Regarding Fred Bradna and the Bradna family: Fred Bradna actually took his surname from his wife, Ella Bradna, the equestrienne, and not the other way round! One direct still living relative of theirs is rather famous, namely Olympe Wilmott, formerly filmstar Olympe Bradna, who lives in California, and only a few other Bradna´s in the States. The last performing Bradna, Willy Bradna of the Bradna Boys, died in 1998. Natasha Gerson, nani@xs4all.nl.

162. Frank Murray elephant trainer, June 06, 2004 - I am looking for information on an elephant trainer named Frank Murray. He used to work on Circus Vargas with Rex Williams. Also is it true that elephant trainer Rex Williams has passed away. Any info would be appreciated. greeneyedbman@aol.com. Respond to this message
Reply: June 11, 2004 - Yes, it is true that Rex Williams has passed away. I'm his grandaughter. Jennifer Rae (Williams) Doby, Ben's daughter. I didn't know about it until two weeks after it had happened. I was in utter shock, I knew that he had been sick, but if I would have known how sick, I would have went to see him before he passed. I didn't even get to go to the funeral. So I guess you can say that I'm in the same boat you are in. I never got to close that part of my life. Everyone was done grieving and I had only begun. My grandfather meant alot to me, he was a very special man! It doesn't matter how I found out or why so late. I know that I was loved and that's what counts! I don't know how you knew him, but everyone who did would agree he was very Special man! dragonsdreaming@yahoo.com.

Their animals were their extended family; as some of the circus people that you mentioned. icuka58@msn.com

160. Target/exhibition shooting, June 04, 2004 - My name is Ralph Finch, and I am attempting a 500-page book on the history of target/exhibition shooting from 1860-1920. While much of this was done with Wild West shows, on theater stages or at county fairs, much was done in circuses. I am interested in the little-known people who exhibited their shooting skills (I have plenty on famous people such as Annie Oakley, Doc Carver and Capt. Bogardus); I am especially interested in purchasing photos of these shooters. Thank you, Ralph Finch, rfinch@twmi.rr.com. [Note: see message 152.] Respond to this message

159. Hamid Morton circus performers, June 04, 2004 - I am trying to locate information and pictures of two performers in the Hamid Morton circus in the late 50s or early 60s. One was a trapeze artist named Shirley Peterson who used to perform trapeze on elephants and suspended from a helicopter. She often stayed at our house and was killed in an auto accident when she was about 28 years old. The other was a women lion-tamer whose name I think was Evelyn Curry or Currie. Frank L. Reply: 19 July 2007 - I just came across your question (dated June 4, 2004) on the Circus History message board, about a female lion tamer with the Hamid Morton Circus. I have just found what appears to be an old photgraph on card stock of a female lion tamer. Written on the photo is "Morton S.F.". I assume this refers to the Hamid Morton Circus and a San Francisco performance. If you are still researching this and are interested, I could send you a scanned copy of the photo. Regards, Mark

158. Circus Ciniselli, June 04, 2004 - I am searching for Circus Ciniselli in Russia. I need information how to start my research. For any further leading information I would be thankfull, best regards, Tino Schmidt, tinoschmidt@web.de. Respond to this message
Reply: August 06, 2004 - Born in Milan in 1815, Gaetano Ciniselli was a famous Italian equestrian who performed for the first time in Russia in 1846 with the troupe of Alessandro Guerra, who had built a circus in St. Peterburg. In 1864, he built his own circus in Milan, on the Foro Bonaparte, where Teatro Dal Verne stands today. Ciniselli was a flamboyant showman and a superlative horse trainer, and his troupe was quite successful in Europe. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1869, to perform for his brother-in-law, the celebrated Austro-Hungarian equestrian Carl-Magnus Hinne, and help him run the circuses he had built in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Then, Ciniselli decided to settle in Russia. He inherited his brother-in-law's circuses in 1875. The circus in Moscow, which will survive until 1896, kept the name of Hinne, but Ciniselli replaced the old circus of St. Petersburg with a beautiful and palatial new circus that he built along the Fontanka Canal in 1877, and which will bear his name. This circus is still active today. Gaetano Ciniselli died of bladder stones ailment on October 4, 1881. He was survived by his wife Wilhelmina, who took over the business, and by his sons Andrea, Scipione and Ernesto, and his daughter, Emma. In 1883, Andrea Ciniselli built a circus in Warsaw, on Ordinatskoy Street, and placed it under the management of his son, Alessandro Ciniselli, who became known as the 'father of the Polish circus' (the circus was bombed by the Germans in 1939). Wilhelmina died in 1886 in St. Petersburg, and was succeeded by Andrea. Andrea retired in 1891 (he died in 1895), and his brother Scipione took over the circuses, but he had the reputation of being exploitative and greedy, which didn't help him after the communist revolution of 1917. Scipione decided to leave Russia in 1918 (like many circus artists and directors of European descent), and the Circus of St. Petersburg, like the two circuses of Moscow, and the other circuses of Russia were nationalized by a decree of Lenin in 1919. This item is of Russian origin and has also got the following autographs on it. Vinisenio Cardinali, Ricardo Benedette, J Ledora, P Rivquez (or Kingvaz), Antonio, Dassie, Jacolino, Everhart and Joanowitz. We hope that we have interpreted the names correctly. I would like to know if you have more information about Gaetano Ciniselli because I’m sure that we have a relationship with him. Thak you in advance. I found the following homepage with an image showing an arena: http://library.lib.binghamton.edu/special/reinhardtwork.html. The library in New York told me the photo was taken in Russia 1911. The image shows a rehearsal of Ödipus Rex. In 1911 Ödipus played at Circus Ciniselli. Could it be possible that the image shows the interior and the arena of Circus Ciniselli? I would be very glad if you could answer my question. Thank you in advance. Yours faithfully, Sabine Koch

157. Ernest Engerer Lion Trainer, June 04, 2004 - I am seeking informatiom about the 1938 Hurricane that hit the eastern end of Long Island, New York. At that time my Uncle Captain Ernest Engerer had a 3 ring circus under a tent at Riverhead, Long Island, NY. Reply: 30 June, 2006 - My father-in-law, J. B. Edwards, grew up in Pipe Creek, TX and remembers the Richards circus wintering on property now located at the intersection of State Highway 16 and Bear Springs Road. He would probably be delighted to talk to you about his memories. He is in his 80s, but mentally very sharp. When I first moved here in the late 60s, there were two older women living in the community that everyone referred to as the Hersch Girls (Maybe spelled Hirsch or Hursch). I believe they were associated with the circus. Also, there are a lot of Richards’ living in Bandera and the area today, some of which are likely to be descendants. Hope this helps. I’d like to know more about this circus, too, as I enjoy collecting local history. Carolyn B. Edwards, cbedwards@78003.com

155. Irwin Bros. Show, June 01, 2004 - Trying to find information on the Irwin Bros. Show circa 1870-1890. Both brothers were originally renowned acrobats. The Irwin Brothers (James and William) were from England and immigrated to the US in 1865 with their parents (parents may have been circus people as well?) William was born circa 1860. William Irwin later married Sarah Agnes Wilson of Buffalo, NY and were billed as "The American Tops". He worked on the trapeze, while balancing on his head and jugglng, while his wife suspended his trapeze from her mouth bit. As well, he worked on a slack wire with one end suspended from his wife's mouth bit. His wife was also one of the world's first to be hoisted by the mouth bit and twirled by a rope handler below. (all this in the late 1880s to mid 1890s) Later, the Irwin Show was acquired by the Ringling operation. The American Tops continued to perform for Ringling. After the Irwin show was acquired by Ringling, their daughter, Marie Katherine (Kitty Mae) Irwin, was the 3 year old girl saved by Jennie the elephant in Carthage, KS in Oct/Nov 1897. Jennie killed an equestrian bear that had attacked the girl. Kitty Mae went on to become a contortionist with the Ringling Show. Later, the Irwins "may" have worked with the Richards Brothers show wintered out of Bandera, TX. Kitty eventually married one of the Richards kin and settled in Texas. It has been mentioned that William Irwin continued to perform into his 60s.
Any information on:
1. the Irwin Brothers,
2. the possible Irwin Show/Circus,
3. date of acquisition of the Irwin operation by Ringling,
4. if the elder Irwin parents were performers in England or the US,
5. and, if the American Tops (William and Sarah) did indeed perform for the Richards Brothers show as well
Any and all information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any assistance. johnsondr@yahoo.com. Respond to this message

152. Trick Shooters, May 23, 2004 - I am attempting to find information about little-known pre-1900 trick shooters for a proposed 500-page reference book on trick/exhibition shooting from 1860-1900. I am interested in the type of shooting people such as Annie Oakley and Capt. Bogardus did, but who were only tiny stars in the trick-shooting galaxy. Ralph, Farmington Hills, MI, rfinch@twmi.rr.com. Respond to this message
Reply: May 28, 2004 - Trick shooters under the circus big top came in various parts of the show, although there were not alot who performed under canvas. There were a limited number in the performance, a few in the concert following the main show, and possibly some in the side show. There are not alot of trick shooters in a 30 by 60 foot side show tent because of the noise, and the chance they will shoot a hole in the canvas. The Sells Bros.Route Book for 1884 noted that The Champion Rifle Shots, Frank Butler and Annie Oakley were in the second section of the three part concert. Not all who handled a gun in the performance were trick shooters, nor always appeared to know what they were doing with a firearm. The Cowboy and Indian Wild West act on the Sells Brothers Circus that performed on July 22, 1887 at Clinton, Iowa got out of hand and a number of patrons in the crowd were shot by performers using loaded instead of blank cartridges. The locals were noted in the newspaper reports but not who was responsible. You may also want to check a book called TOWN HALL TONIGHT by Horlowe Randall Hoyt, printed in 1955 which is the history of small town stage performances. Likewise a number of Dime Museums had trick shooters with them - June 23, 1890 H. M. Thompson's Dime Museum presented Miss Daisy Shelley, the Shooting Star at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin for the whole week in the Red Front Store at No. 514 Main Street. Also by researching Wild West Shows you will get better results. A review of the Oklahoma Hill Wild West Show for May 1889 in Chicago noted - Captain Bogardus and his three sons performing with rifles, Little Harry Hill a 13 years old who was a good marksman, & S. F. Cody and his wife peforming a number of difficult feats with the 45 caliber revolvers. Some times it was a bad example to show a gun in public, and it was frowned upon in Chicago when 21 boys who saw the show flourished their revolvers in the face of the audience and were fined $1 each by the local judge. The Ad for H. W. Pomeroy's Great Western World at Millersburg, Ohio August 19, 1889 noted that they would be presenting W. D. Amemt and Winnie Nichelson, (Little Quick-Shot), The Challenge Rifle Team. John Polacsek, Detroit, Michigan
